Avatar: The Way of Water | 16 DEC 2022 | Don't worry guys, critics like it

I hope Avatar is re-released in IMAX/3D this year for the 10th anniversary. I never got to see it in theaters during it's theatrical run, but I became more of a fan of the franchise after riding the mind-blowing "Flight of Passage" at Disney (waited a total of 180 min to ride it twice lol). I'm excited to see what Jim comes up with for A2.

Welcome 😎

I stand by the Flight of Passage is the greatest Advert of all time! I think it will have ran through over 100m viewings by the time it gets to December 2020.

I too am excited to see what he will come up with because the most interesting plotlines I can think of will be put to shame, he blows expectations out of the park time and time again. At this point the only expectation he meets he beating expectations.

I don't think you fully understand what it's going to take for Endgame to catch Avatar. See my previous posts a few pages back. I do think Endgame will catch Titanic to become #2.

What are the chances of EG actually managing to overcome the $700m gulf it needs to cross before Jim can start sweating?

Right, let's do this.

Goal: $2800m

Absolute maximum from Domestic is $900m, no way it can go higher (that's with 300 opening and 3x legs). Absolute maximum from China is $600m.

So we have $1500m, we need another $1300m. OS-C did about $1.05B for IW iirc, so a 25% increase is needed. That seems difficult but doable.

I think the main challenges here are Domestic and China. To beat Avatar, Domestic needs to get near $850-900m, as there's just no way Europe can increase enough to balance that. China is looking at around $500m anyway, so with the holidays next week it might actually reach $600m.

I would put the chance less than 1% at the moment, based on the fact that I can't see domestic going that high yet, and we don't know what kind of crazy Europe has planned.

I don't think you fully understand how China Market has evolved over the past few years. China once helped Avatar become WW No.1 and would now help taking it down.

How did China help exactly? It would have still been #1 even without the China gross.

Avatar $2.788 B - $204 million from China = $2.584 B still #1 at the Box Office without China. China accounted for 7.31% of Avatar's total.

Avengers Infinity War (2018) made $359.5 million in China, 17.55% of global total of $2.048 B. How much higher can it climb in China? A 50% improvement would push Endgame to $540 million, that's a lot to ask in 1 year since Infinity War.

Bond has 24 or whatever movies and only once went over 1B, so number of movies, or years doesn't matter. For the record you need to grab the zeitgeist (romance with Titanic, 3D with Avatar, CBMs with Endgame) and make rewatchable objectively good movie

JC: We did a lot of capture. We've got another problem too, which is we've got characters in different scales that are played by humans that are the same size. So I've got humans and now the Avatars. So we've got two adjacent sets in the same volume. On one I'll have a kid who's supposed to be a human kid, but he's acting to his Na'vi friend, a Na'vi teenager.

Really interesting on how they shot this stuff and problems they faced.
