Avatar: The Way of Water | 16 DEC 2022 | Don't worry guys, critics like it

Avatar 2 will be released in a new era. Maybe theatrical window will be reduces to 1 month by then, maybe vaccine is distributed worldwide and people return in masses to theaters, maybe consumer behaviour towards theaters changes, who knows what will happen in box office terms. Any bold prediction of what could happen to the future of movies and especially avatar 2 box office?

James Cameron finds a 100% effective vaccine for COVID at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, he then ensures that every human on the planet is given the vaccine. Every vaccine contains a microchip that embeds itself in the shoulder of the inoculated person and periodically whispers “Go see Avatar 2, in theatres and IMAX, Christmas 2022”. Everyone complies to silence the microchip. Avatar 2 makes a billion trillion dollars.

More convinced than ever that this is going to be a Disney+ event.

This is where I'm at. I think domestic theater count is going to drop precipitously due to various factors at work, and Disney follows WB and either releases films simultaneously in theaters and on D+ or shifts to D+ as the primary means of distribution. Maybe Avatar 2 does well internationally, but in the US I think it'll be mostly a D+ event.

I expected this kind of transition eventually, but this is all happening way faster than I ever imagined it could or would. I think it would take series of miraculous events to salvage an epic theatrical run for Avatar 2. The box office era as we knew it in 2019 is gone and not coming back soon, if ever.

First look at the comic book coming out next month. Looks like Jake is standing over his human grave pondering his future.

AVATAR: THE NEXT SHADOW #1

Jake Sully maintains his position as leader of the Omatikaya Na'vi tribe, but with their homeland in ruins, he begins to doubt his place among them. As the Na'vi and human feud persists, tensions between the tribes begin to escalate as longstanding family rivalries ignite--spawning treachery and betrayal!

* An untold story set immediately after the events of Avatar!

last day for all of them? so he's gonna die in 3? since 4 and 5 haven't been shot yet

also what am i looking at here

Last day for him on #2 and 3, they haven't started shooting 4 or 5 yet according to Stephen Lang.

Champion plays a character called "Spider" the first human born on Pandora who apparently enjoys spending more time beyond the fence than within it.

There wasn't a peep about Avatar at the Disney media event last week which was focused mostly on Marvel/Star Wars/Pixar and upcoming Disney + product. Very little was said about 20th Century. Avatar will be a theatrical event first.

From Jon Landau

The last set for 2020 filming —The Matador (a 50’ forward command boat) on a 16-ton, 360 degree motion-control base. Three Technocranes and a Russian Arm mounted on top of a Mercedes-Benz. Just another day on the set of the Avatar sequels.

What could possibly happen at this point that would prompt another delay? If this thing isn’t ready two years from now, I’ll seriously have to question what exactly James Cameron is doing.

Pretty much nothing. The film itself will almost certainly be finished well before December 2022. The only possible reason for another delay would be if cinemas aren't ready for Avatar 2 by then, which is extremely unlikely.

Catch a small preview of the comic book coming out next week, the first post-Avatar story.

Yes, the swarm of Avatar sequels from director James Cameron is still waiting in the Hollywood wings and should start rolling out in theaters in 2022 with Avatar 2. But while we hold onto our round-trip tickets to Pandora, a new sequel comic book series from Dark Horse might make the wait a little easier — and SYFY WIRE has an exclusive first look inside the premiere issue.

Bridging the gap between James Cameron's original movie from 2009 and the long-awaited follow-up, Avatar: The Next Shadow #1 is a four-issue miniseries creeping into comic shops on Jan. 6.

Avatar: The Next Shadow is a continuation of Jake Sully's saga taking place between Avatar movies. Here Jake maintains his position as chieftan of the Omatikaya Na'vi tribe, but with their homeland decimated, he starts to doubt his place among them and struggles to maintain peace in the aftermath of war.

Right after the destruction of the Na' vi Hometree, with the Na'vi versus Humans feud still hot, Jake discovers himself ineffective in trying to calm the simmering tensions of the tribes. Family rivalries rise to the surface with treachery and betrayal rearing their ugly heads. Will the internal strife rip the Omatikaya apart and banish Jake from the clan forever?
