But we still got things like Norm of the North and Dirty Grandpa littering up the screens so yeah, it's still generally seen as a month where movies of dubious quality go to slip in and out as quickly as possible.

Also, the much-delayed, very much-troubled Jane Got a Gun is finally seeing the light of day at the end of the month. For a while, everyone probably assumed it would never open.

I think you guys are talking about 2 different things: box office and quality.

TFA did not lose any theaters this week. 4 straight weeks with no theater loss.

Disney made a 4 week minimum engagement as part of the contract to show the film.  It's why Tarantino was throwing a fit about not getting one of the theaters he wanted for Hateful 8.

Well, most of the movies opening this month (aka movies that didn't get a qualifying launch in December) look like stuff that the studios don't have confidence in, so they're probably thinking, "yeah, let's just see if audiences take to this or not, and if they don't then they don't, no loss on us. They'll be completely forgotten by the time summer arrives anyway."

It is earning money still, but Disney made a 4 week exclusivity contract with theaters and a 6 week contract with IMAX. That is the reason for no theater loss.

I imagine the home entertainment release will be around Easter so it'll likely be gone from theaters from early March

Whoa there, early March!? It should still be grossing over 3m a weekend, they'd be idiots to pull it already.

Dirty Grandpa is not a dump, you guys know Efron's last comedy opened to 50M right?

His previous comedy before that (That Awkward Moment, a fellow January release) didn't even make $30M in total. And his last starring vehicle didn't even make $5M in total. Keep in mind he also shared top billing with Seth Rogen, a popular comedy actor, on Neighbors so he had a decent pull there too.

Dirty Grandpa was once going to be a summer release before it got cast off to a random January weekend and the ads are really bad, so I'm guessing it's being left for dead. But then we've already been subjected to the horrifying image of a De Niro/Aubrey Plaza sex scene so there's really no more reason to fuel that nightmare juice.

The Revenant is kicking asses this weekend in Germany, Russia, Australia...The hit is worldwide, not only DOM.

Di Caprio must be the biggest hollywood star on the last decade.

It is interesting how it is this past decade his draw power has really taken off, not so much the decade following Titanic. I mean he did have Catch Me if You Can and The Departed in that span, but it has been since Shutter Island he's been so huge and consistent.

Looking at the schedule, the arrival of competition each week is going to force it to loose theaters at a quicker rate. Plus I'm sure Disney is planning a home release around early April.

The big theater loss weeks though before then would be to KFP3 and Deadpool/Zoolander. Otherwise I think it will retain like a champ in most other weekends prior to March.
