The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Based on the trailers, Last Night in Soho looks like Edgar Wright crawling up his own rectum and trying to be artsy, I’m not surprised that the more mainstream looking Antlers is going to outperform it over Halloween weekend.

Antlers is sure to do worse than Soho given that hardly anyone knows it exists. Third 20th Century/Searchlight nonstarter in as many weeks. Disney must be thrilled that Eternals is right around the corner.

Soho was always destined to be more of a future cult hit than a mainstream one, even with Anya's starpower blowing up over the course of its one year delay, so $8-9M next weekend sounds about right.

I did a cursory glance yesterday (though I didn’t look too closely) and when you take out the Dolby showings, Soho and Antlers seemed closer than you might think. I don’t think it’s too crazy to say Antlers can reach high single digits, which would be fine for a likely cheap horror title

Yeah I've been looking around and Soho's sales are pitiful outside of Dolby screens. I wonder what the first movie that does well without any assistance from PLF formats will be.

From the looks of it, The French Dispatch and My Hero Academia :hahaha:

FWIW My Hero Academia is getting some Cinemark XD screens next weekend (checking around it appears to be mainly at locations that have more than one giant screen, the other screens I assume will be sticking with Dune) so it won't be entirely without PLF assistance.

The slow down seems normal the bump was probably coming from the reactions.Anyway lets see how the reviews  will help .

The Eternals

Toronto Ontario

Taken Oct 24 for Thursday Nov 4

11 Theatres

39 Shows

Total Sold 1336

Total Available  8793

Total Amt of seats (Sold plus Available) 10229

Sold Percentage 14.04

Right now I am doing pretty much anything within a 20 Km area of shows, so it's smaller. I might get daring over the holidays and start doing bigger GTA and areas for films(Toronto, Scarborough, Vaughn ect).

If I think my sanity could take it...hahahahah......

Eternals MTC2

I took numbers yesterday but somehow, despite thinking I had posted them, I hadn't posted them. So the pace mentioned below is 24 hours (closer to 23).

Thursday

Showtimes: 1956

Seats Sold: 31334/318716 (+1466)

$ Sales: 445658 (+20200)

Friday

Showtimes: 3719

Seats Sold: 23014/622000 (+1231)

$ Sales: 309514 (+16739)

Review bump is nothing much so far. I guess people won't check into news as much on weekends though, so weird choice to drop embargo on a Sunday. Guess it couldn't be helped with the Rome festival but I don't think I've ever seen a weekend embargo drop before. Let's see if tomorrow is better, I'd have liked to see a bigger bump (also the review being mixed probably didn't help).

My Hero Academia MTC2

Friday

Subbed Showtimes: 580

Subbed Seats Sold: 11038/86462

Subbed $ Sales: 153719

Dubbed Showtimes: 708

Dubbed Seats Sold: 19190/100683

Dubbed $ Sales: 273833

Combined Showtimes: 1288

Combined Seats Sold: 30228/187145

Combined $ Sales: 427552

Dubbed occupancy better than subbed, subbed purists in shambles.

Spoiler

In all seriousness, this seems very good, but need to check into DS comps.

How on earth would sunday matter for online ticket sales!!! Venom 2 had ginormous boost sunday before and without any reviews. I did not track BW on its review release date but that week was huge. its pace was 2x what I see for eternals at this point. That is why I said expectations for this is out of whack relative to trend. Meh reviews wont help at all.

Yeah the mediocre reviews are not helping at all. These next few days could be real bad guys.

This is really strong. But release is tiny. So there is limit to its gross. But with next weekend being weak, this could end up winning the weekend if Dune falls around 60%.
