The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Yeah, it’s just so hard comping to LLL, being a front runner for many awards that year. That being said, hope Darkest Hour does well. I’m surprised Shape of Water didn’t expand this week

I guess Fox thinks they can retain theaters by waiting to expand until Oscar nominations? Maybe it gains a couple hundred next weekend, but they'll be focusing on The Post.

Insidious

Jumaji

Maybe Insidious won't do so poorly. Starved enough market. SoW should have expanded and Molly's Game should have expanded wider earlier. Weird choices both.

Downsizing and Father Figures have sold nothing.

Insidious is running at 90% of HDD (23.4M) and on par with Jigsaw (16.6M). However, only one of those new tickets is for a daytime showing. Nighttime sales are accounting for 91% of tickets compared to 56% for Jigsaw and 84% for HDD. Don't be surprised if this is pretty frontloaded.

Molly comps (PTAs):

15% of OE (2.1M)

21% of Bad Moms Christmas (1.6M)

33% of AM (2.9M)

33% of MBU (1.8M)

50% of The Foreigner (4.2M)

75% of Downsizing (2.2M)

80% of TYFYS (2.4M)

105% of Suburbicon (2.3M)

133% of OTB (5M)

Yikes.

Juamnji has widened the gap at the top on MT.com.

Right now, 1> Jumanji - 19.1% & 2> The Last Jedi - 15.2%.

Edit : I refreshed the page on MT.com and TLJ dropped to 15%. The gap is becoming bigger.

For next week, I think my local 12s are again holding out and watching the market...

One local (the Cinemark) has prebooked 3 movies (Paddington, The Post, and A - Prince in Exile) for presales.  The other local (the Regal) has only prebooked Paddington for presales.  I expect both to pick up more new movies for next week, but it will be interesting when they decide to do so...

Mid-day MT.com

20.0% Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

15.6% Star Wars: The Last Jedi

10.6% Insidious: The Last Key

8.8% Greatest Showman, The

5.6% Pitch Perfect 3

As expected, insidious is losing steam as typical horror while others are pretty stable except for jumanji is rising up

I wonder when Black Panther's presales will be, I assume it'll be either next week or the week after.

I wouldn't be surprised if WB times Ready Player One's presales for late February.

Boner Omega said they would start tomorrow. My two home theaters also have showtimes up for Thursday, but they aren’t for sale yet. Makes sense, since there’s a promo for some football game tomorrow
