The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Not saying this will definitely happen but is it possible the Thursday numbers for Shazam are so weak pre-sales wise because of the burnt off demand because of the Fandango showings?

that didn't happen for Aquaman which had similar early screenings plus Shazam Thursday previews will start at 4PM so if anything they should be high.

Aquaman and Shazam are different kinds of movies plus the different times of year. We'll see though.

EDIT: Also the Aquaman showings were waaaay more restricted then Shazam's.

Can’t speak for presales anywhere else but my closest theatre with reserved seating has 167/600 sold for Shazam for imax for tomorrow, that’s not bad honestly.  It only has 2 shows preview night most places. For comparison CM had 4 shows and the final sales were 806/1456 for the 4 shows in presales that I could track.

The thing for Shazam is it’s not getting a huge amount of shows cause it’s not tracking big so it can’t really over perform around me. Hopefully it can get good walk up business.

Higher than the first days of Infinity War, Captain Marvel, Black Panther and The Last Jedi COMBINED.

What the hell are we looking at here....

More from that report.

AMC did more on for the first day for Endgame ticketing than the initial day of advance tickets for Infinity War, Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Last Jedi combined

That was also the case for the site's international brands with Endgame breaking records in 12 countries, according to a spokesman.”

Now we just have to see if we can collectively figure out just how much better EG is doing than IW, if only in a ballpark range.

I don’t think we will truly know that for another week or so.  The amount of tickets it sold yesterday is AMAZING... and expected. The hardcore fanbase has been clamoring for them for weeks, AND they are super late compared to other MCU films. So props to Disney Marketing for creating that frenzy and snatching those headlines. (Would have perferred you did it in a way that didn’t crash the Fandago Tracker, but you do you.)

Based the hard data I have on my small market, and the eye ball estimates of NYC and LA, I suspect we are looking at End Game being SUPER frontloaded.  The rush to see this without getting spoiled is real. Thursday is basically gone, but Sunday is still wide open at the theaters I’ve been tracking.

If I had to go into the Box Office Casino thread right now, I would be betting on AEG beating the TFA “Friday” Single Day Record instead of it besting AIW’s OW.

I am still not feeling the 300M hype.  250M is the floor, imho.  Marvel’s going to need one of their marvelous Saturdays for that OW record. Depending on how it ends, you might not have repeat hardcore viewers on OW to push it over the record. (They both live, right TalismanRing 🤞) On the other hand, by Sunday you might have some casuals showing up just to be part of the hoopla.  (My aunt at Dumbo yesterday did ask me when it was safe for the laymen to go 😂)

The one thing I am no longer concerned about is screen space. At in my local market, we are already over IW’s screen count.

Also, alas, because...

We did not have a Fandago showing in our area.

Thursday Shazam IMAX has sold: 16/432. And only 2 tickets out of the non IMAX showings.

So, I would say no. I think Shazam (and Hellboy) is the causality of being in the middle of a Marvel perfect storm. And that is a shame. It looks cute. WB should have moved it up to February.

I don't know about others, but I certainly didn't expect Endgame to beat TFA's 24 hour presales in 6 hours.  I honestly wasn't even expecting it to beat TFA at all.

Agreed. I thought it would've been lucky to beat TLJ since IW couldn't even beat Rogue One.

Considering Hellboy isn’t having any critics screenings, I think it was going to bomb regardless of when it came out.

The new Hellboy looks really bad and I really like both the GDT movies and David Harbour. Flopping with a sub-$40M total seems likely.

Im still bitter that we never got Hellboy 3. Del Toro and Perlman was the perfect pairing for the series and the first two films were very good.
