Mendelson has spoken. He has declared JLaw a BO star thanks to this 17M opening

Box Office: 'Red Sparrow' Proves Jennifer Lawrence Is A Movie Star

Scott loves Jen. If this were an actor or actress he didn't like, the headline would be about how so and so is not a movie star who doesn't deserve the $20M paychecks they get.

Peter Rabbit is showing great legs should be able to do 100m+. And J2 and TGS are back to their usual drops before last week's hiccup.

Yep, it's a quiet hit. Augmenting Sony's big Jumanji smash. Sony on the rise!

From reading his past articles, it seems to me he loves the idea of movie stars and hates that they are a dying breed. I'm not surprised he hyped JLaw even with this mediocre opening

Red Sparrow sure is lucky it didn't open without a "movie star" like J Law. May have only done $15m.

I can't imagine anyone else being in the role. The movie is already bordeline passable, but without her, it would've flat out sucked.

Ok, but it's a heavily marketed $70m budgeted movie opening to $17m. Failing to see where a $17m OW for something like that proves any kind of draw power. Would it really have opened much worse without her? Seems unlikely. ScarJo opened Lucy to $40m+. Now that's proving your draw power.

I was at AMC Fasion Valley 18 around noon yesterday and overheard someone say to a group of about 10 people “We’ve got to come back after 5pm, all the shows for Black Panther are sold out until then.”

I quickly looked at the showtimes and there were 5 showings from 1pm to 4:15pm that were definitely sold out.  It was just crazy scene outside the theater.  You had kids doing the tribal shoulder dances waiting for their friends to get out of the restrooms. Others trying to record themselves on their phones doing lines from the movies.

All this in it’s THIRD weekend!

meanwhile in china, 2 movies marching toward $500m and another reached $350m.....

It's sad to see domestic market is quickly losing its century-long crown......

To be honest I feel like Charlize Theron, Scarjo or even Margot Robbie would have been good in the role. I don't think it was a movie that needed Jlaw. It's a movie that if it doesn't have the right star carrying it, would suck like you said but there are other actresses who I think could have pulled off the film.
