I could swear we had some people here with sky high expectations. Plus, didn’t it supposedly get of the highest test screening scores ever?

Ehhh it made 150mil WW on a budget of 58mil so it made money just not a lot, i'd like to see its home video sales though.

Just looked at by the numbers and home video only adds 19~ mill.

The top 10 is completely dominated by sci fi and superheroes.

Except for one fantasy and computer animation movie (ROTK is getting knocked out).

I wish other types of films could be as competitive like in the past decades, but it looks like the box office will continue to be dominated by Marvel, Star Wars, and (in a few years) Avatar sequels for a long time. When you look back even as recent as the 90s, you had all types of genres break out. Forrest Gump had 78,614,600 admissions (more than The Avengers), Home Alone had 67,734,200 (more than the Last Jedi), and Twister had 54,688,100 (more than Age of Ultron). There's no way any of those films could come close to their original admissions if released today.

It was a joke, I'm just referring to how terrible the movies are, I'm aware they made money.

To quote Michael Keaton in the trailer for Spiderman: "World's changing. Time we changed too."

     Finding Dory: 57.5Mio

11. BP with 650Mio (56.65Mio)

11. Monsters, Inc.: 55.5Mio

12. BP with 625Mio (54.5Mio)

12. The Passion of the Christ: 54Mio

13. SW EP III: 52Mio

14. Frozen: 51.55Mio

15. B&tB: 51Mio

16. Return of the King: 50.5Mio

17. TDKR: 50Mio

22. The Two Towers: 48.5Mio

      Transformers 2: 48.5Mio

      THG: Catching Fire: 48.5Mio

25. The Curse of the Black Pearl: 47Mio

26. SW EP II: 46.75Mio

27. The Fellowship of the Ring: 44Mio

28. Avengers: AoU: 38.4Mio

So BP is now at 21. but most likely will finish at 8.

If you go to boxofficemojo.com, they have all kinds of tools to help you figure grosses out.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=starwars7.htm&adjust_yr=1&p=.htm

In this link, look in the top right hand corner of the page, you will see a drop down menu that has tickets sold, and then you can adjust the film to dollars made adjusted for any year.  So if you want to adjust The Force Awakens to dollars made in 1989, you can use the drop down menu.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=starwars7.htm&adjust_yr=1985&p=.htm

And so on

Franchise is trending downwards. Look at what happened to Transformers.

Most franchises trend downwards (usually by 3rd installment). As much as I didn't like pirates 5 that much I must admit for a 5th installment it did very well (especially with the worse ER)

Yeah, that list isn't particularly close to being true. You can't just take the average ticket prices of a year and apply those to a movie. To get even a somewhat decent view of how many tickets a movie may have sold, you need to look at what would be the average ticket price of the movie itself, which requires looking at the shares of 2D, 3D, IMAX and whatever other category there is. Sadly, those numbers aren't always available.

Avatar, for example, has a grossly inflated number in this chart, because it had an 80% 3D-share, if I remember correctly. Estimates for it basically put it on one level with The Dark Knight in terms of tickets sold. TFA also has a pretty high share of 3D and other expensive tickets, putting it somewhere in the low 90s, definately not above 100m. The same obviously applies to much of that list. Exact numbers are impossible to tell, as unlike in many other places, tickets sold does not seem to be something that gets counted for individual movies.

I think it was @spizzer who once posted a list based on calculations that included the shares of different tickets. Not sure if he still has it floating around somewhere.

TLJ could have ended up much higher if they had a better director.

Problem being 3D/IMAX/PLF throws a monkey wrench into everything from the last decade.
