same was last year ?

Labor Day is the first Monday of September every year.

Last year Disney chose to re-release I2 on that date to get it above the 600 million mark, and it worked.

Prior to labor day, it was at 597 total after a 1.6 million weekend.

They increased the theatre count by +1830 the next weekend to 2890 total and grossed 4.7 million. It made roughly 11 million thanks to it's labor day expansion.

8 Star Wars films have won the year domestically:

Star Wars

Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi

The Phantom Menace

Revenge of the Sith

The Force Awakens

Rogue One

The Last Jedi

3 MCU films have won the year domestically:

Avengers

Black Panther

Endgame

Odd, considering the MCU has made so much more money.

Yeah, but look at the figures for those three movies that the MCU won with...

It's been a growing brand both domestically and worldwide. Domestically, SW is still incredibly strong, though there is a feeling of a bit of stagnation.

Half the SW movies on that list are from an age where there were no contenders for the uber-franchise crown ASIDE from SW. Now there's a new kid on the block...The MCU, which, by contrast, is a young franchise, and you can far easily see a number of future projects winning the year.

Re; Long Shot:

Film had no marketing campaign. First trailer released 2 months ago. Entire world focused on Endgame and nothing but Endgame. It's release data bounced around 2 or 3 times. The film's name was only announced 5 months ago.

You guys are reading to much into the Seth Rogen/Charlize Theron aspect. Regardless of the stars, this film wasn't going to be successful with the way it was marketed and distributed.

that means that if they do the same with endgame , then the movie could beat tfa if its close enough before that

I think the labor day expansion is a given at this point.

It's going to be either the #2 or #1 grossing movie domestically by that point.

It's the end chapter of a hugely successful Avengers franchise (Phases 1-3).

That weekend only have Playmobil releasing, so it would likely be able to get back it's IMAX/Dolby screens.

Well last year neither Black Panther nor Infinity War got it, and they were No 1 and 2 respectively. Instead it went to Incredibles 2.  So it could easily just go to Toy Story 4 or The Lion King or they may not expand any.

The trailers never really got a good reaction in theaters. Also to pull the movie like this off you need better Stars
