If you haven't seen it before I would recommend the 2014 HBO adaptation of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart (which is practically essential viewing this Pride since he passed away last month). It definitely shows its stage origins, but it taps into the horror and the anger of that dark period in history and is terrifically acted, especially from Matt Bomer (I told him he was moving in it when I met him that one time a few years ago and he also paid tribute to Kramer recently with this nice piece:  https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/matt-bomer-larry-kramer-anger-can-be-incredibly-motivating-1296705 )

Oh, it’s on my long-ass HBO Max list. I’ll probably power through all of Angels in America first, but we’ll see.

I also checked out But I’m a Cheerleader for the first time. It’s a cute and hilarious romance complete with performances from Cathy Moriarty and RuPaul that basically go back and forth saying “That’s not camp. THIS is camp!”

Godzilla 1954 proves that you can make a Godzilla movie with compelling characters and a genuinely enjoyable story (that's also thoughtful and harrowing at the same time). Dr Serizawa is a much more complex and interesting than any character in the last two Hollywood films and this scene had me on the verge of tears:

I went in expecting the Godzilla stuff to be the best part but honestly, I thought that was the worst parts of the film (Godzilla in this is way too cute to be terrifying) and lowered what would've been a 10/10 to a 9/10. A perfect template on how to make a human-focused Godzilla film that the last two Hollywood movies clearly ignored. Hopefully Godzilla vs Kong at least throws away the humans and focuses on the monsters.

Finally watched Knives Out.  After helping to teach high school Classic Detective Fiction and True Crime Fiction this year (and watching the movies that went along with them), well, this was a nice throwback.  A little slow, a little predictable (probably b/c I've read so much Christie and Doyle lately), but really, really enjoyable:).

I'll give it a B+ and a morning well spent.  The top 3 kids watched it with me, and they all also give it a thumbs up (youngest figured he'd be too bored, and that's just as well:)...

Three first time viewings in the last couple days:

Dick Tracy - Liked this one a whole lot. I can’t imagine the powers-that-be making a big movie this pulpy and stylish today. The pairing of Madonna and Stephen Sondheim is also sublime.

Bend It Like Beckham - Really fun, though the filmmakers aren’t kidding any viewers who see Jess/Jules as a thing with that straight romantic subplot.

Fatal Attraction - Loses some of its effectiveness from the fact that so many later films imitated its conventions, but Glenn Close really brings it.

now that i got my old tv working currently going through old labeless tapes of stuff i'd recorded in the past. currently watching an ITV broadcast of The Sixth Sense that I'd estimate is from late 2003/early '04 judging by the adverts.

got around to seeing the 2nd film in the Sergio Leone's dollars trilogy, For a Few More Dollars  and I liked it way more than Fistful, there was a scene in which Clint Eastwood and the Colonel exchange shooting each other's hats to pieces that was top notch and i loved how good the lighting/shadows looked with the constant close-ups to highlight character tensions, but I can't get over how cool the final duel was synced to the pocket watch theme.

I can't wait to see The Good, The Bad and The Ugly next (which is considered the best from Leone) but this one is prolly a fav in the genre.

I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and is this show really supposed to be good? It feels like I’m watching episodes of Goosebumps

It has it's ups and downs but it's great. It's also a cult show from the 90s. I absolutely love it but I remember even in 2005 when I started watching it the production values made it a pretty rough watch until deep into season 2. I can't imagine how much rougher it 'll look to someone watching in 2020 for the first time. Pretty much all the exterior/graveyard scenes of the extremely low budget 1st season were shot on the studio parking lot. It gets a decent budget from season 2 onwards but only decent for WB standards. It was never a big network tentpole show like X-Files or Lost.

So, huh, Princess Mononoke was good. Who’d a thought?

Other than Spirited Away, found all others just not my cup of tea. Didn't like Neighbour Totoro, Ponoyo felt too childish, Princess Monoke was good in start then donno what happened. Howl's Moving Castle same problem but still ok.

Week 11

13-19 June 2020

  1. My Sassy Girl: Found it highly overrated. Neither the humor works nor the romantic part is really great with overall story being weak too. 3/10
  2. The Fool: Excellent. When a common man tries to help a collapsing building, faces corruption and hopelessness, he just stand there as a Fool. Must watch. 8/10.
  3. Blue Is The Warmest Colour: 15 minutes of film followed by short porn clip, that's what goes in this 3 hour long film with boring characters and boring life. The first and second sex was good, after that even sex gets boring. I think the film might have connected well in 2 hour runtime trimming all sex scenes. They barely add anything to film but break flow of it. 2/10.
  4. Artemis Fowl: So watched it even after the shitty reviews and it wasn't that bad till half time or so but the final act is a giant turd. Anyhow the film at most times feels rushed with no development of characters. 3/10.

Movie of the Week: The Fool

I went back to cinemas today and I saw...

It was actually a very enjoyable time at the movies. It is fun and it has a lot of heart, even if we have seen this story a million other times before.

So I watched Shrek 2 finally and still don't get the hype. I mean, yeah it's quite good 5/10 movie, may be strech to 6/10 but, don't understand the hype around it.

You had to be there. As a kid.
