it's been exactly 20 years since a movie that made over 300M dom and 900M WW won Best Picture.

It is also the most expensive best picture winner since LOTR3. No other best picture winner cost more than 50m since LOTR3.

Said it in Dune thread. If it cleans up as we all hope and expect it'll normalize awarding big blockbusters again. Paves the way for Dune win be it 2 or Messiah.

Why would a historical drama pave the way for a Dune 2 win? Would you be saying the same thing if the $200 mil budgeted KOTFM wins best picture?

Historical dramas haven't won in a long time either and this is really about being a blockbuster. So yes it will pave a way for big movies to make a comeback.

The best part about RDJ's awards sweep is that he gets to do it all over again during the next awards cycle on the TV side because he looks so juicy in The Sympathizer (multiple characters!). Have to imagine he's the automatic frontrunner, especially when the Limited Supporting Actor Emmy category is looking to be crazy weak this year. Jonathan Bailey and Lewis Pullman are the only other people whose shows have been seen so far that I would confidently say aren't missing the nominations.

The Departed in 2006/2007 def cost more than 50 million. But still to have only one is pretty crazy.

Ok, let's assume it's about being a blockbuster (eventhough it doesnt matter). How come not a single blockbuster has won in the past 20 years since LOTR won? It's not like Oppenheimer is the first blockbuster to ever win BP. Other blockbusters have won before. Why is this one the one to open the floodgates? Your argument has nothing to back it up.

There’s something funny about all the same actors being on the exhausting awards circuit for weeks and weeks. Must instil a weird camaraderie, even among competing films. As much as movies about the movie business can be annoying I feel like it’s quite fertile ground for a comedy. I know Christopher Guest did For Your Consideration but that was about actors who expected to get nominated and didn’t.

I think it’s way too long. They should try to have the Oscars finished by January 31st.

Too fast, they won't be able to finish all the guild ceremonies or award shows in time before Oscar unless they remove some awards show like CC and GG totally can combine.

Final weekend of the Feb is a good spot.

Move the other awards stuff earlier in the calendar throughout December & January.

I liked it when the Oscars were in early February in 2020 (a decision that looks even more wise in retrospect lmao) because it didn't mean the season felt dragged out like it does whenever it takes place in March. But now it's all about spacing out the other awards so that everyone can prepare accordingly. Both the Indie Spirit Awards and the PGA Awards were yesterday and the stars who went to both events were wearing the same outfits since they must've moved from the ceremony to cars immediately once the former ended.

I think they want to keep it as late as possible to squeeze as much as they can from the season. If everything is done in few weeks, they wont get as much.

Does it matter anymore when most movies in the Oscar race  are already on streaming?

I've always found late February to be the desirable spot to end awards season since January/February have typically been dump zones re: movie releases for the most part (including this year), that way we can officially look forward to the spring movie season and beyond before they actually arrive. Though we've been seeing early surprises that maintained their momentum recently. Get Out, Black Panther, and Everything Everywhere All at Once all released before the previous calendar year's Oscar season had concluded.

Many won before ROTK. And then the trend stopped. Titanic won in 1998. ROTK in 2003. That's 5 years between winners that grossed over 300M dom and over 1B WW (or in Oppenheiemr case over 900M WW). In between was Gladiator win in 2001. The movie made 187M dom and 465M WW which was huge for an R rated movie in pre-3D era. And then 20 years between ROTK and Oppenheimer. So Oppenheimer could open the floodgates again. Fingers crossed.

its not about BO. its about the news cycle overall about movies are thriving. Longer they can sustain the interest, its better for them.

This wont work if we did not have a high profile movie like Oppenheimer dominating the awards season.

I don’t see how this most likely winning Best Picture would be a sign of things to come. The subject matter is a lot more fit for the Oscars than most of the other big moneymakers nowadays.
