Scott Mendelson still thinks Dune will finish at 108m

I mean, even with rotten holds, if WB plays the sony game or even the GvK game they will drag it to the 100m mark. Question becomes do they feel they will need to or will iy happen naturally.

Well, MHA is the top new movie this week, so my Cinemark set trend seems on point...that's the silver lining of a poor weekend...

Initial mid-week number suggest some interesting 2nd week hold and quickly seal 100m deal but in the end, this is proven to be just another boring HBO max 2nd weekend hold.

Wish I had the Voice power to change WB/AT's mind on day-to-date release model.

I'm so curious what the preview numbers are for Last Night in Soho given it can't even get to $5M off a $1.9M opening day. Was the pure Friday really that bad?

I never really understood or witnessed the hype for Dune.  I know the forums here hyped it up quite a bit but it just never seemed to be that event film that it what's perhaps thought to be. I know Denis Villeneuve is a great director and he's had a couple of nice size hits with Blade Runner and Arrival, but I don't think his name alone is something it gets people into the theatre. I thought the 40 million opening was actually really good. I hate using this phrase because it irks me when others do as well LOL but it was a remake or sequel or whatever it is that nobody really asked for. If it makes it to 100 million domestically that would be quite the accomplishment. I don't think it'll get there, but we still got a few weeks left. Yes I'm sure the HBO release wasn't exactly great for it but as @filmnerdjamie pointed out those numbers weren't even that good either.

It's going to do about what BR2099 did domestically. At considerably higher costs.

Yet that was deemed a flop and this is a hit?

I see crazy pills are being handed out like candy.

Did you forget that we are still in a pandemic and the movie is on HBO Max? Considering these very hard circumstances, i'd say the movie is doing stellar

One was struck by HBO Max and a pandemic. One is also on the path for 270m OS and 360m WW, which is fine for a movie budgeted at 165m whose only financial goal is to justify a sequel. Also, the "considerably higher costs" are 165m vs 150m for BR2049. Also, BR2049 was a flop because of its OS being awful (260m WW); Dune is gonna do 100m more.

Well if you don't want to acknowledge the HBO Max release, piracy and a pandemic, it is crazy.

And ignoring that Dune will do +100M more WW seems crazy too.
