Fine in theory, going to be a PITA to enforce, particularly for lower volume days and shows

The theater chain in my country tried this years ago but failed because too many buying front seats but ended up seating in the middle especially during mid-week and the implementation had been troublesome, disruptive and damage good will with audience.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to introduce something like this with the takeover of reserved seating because you know theaters want to ensure customers are happy with being stuck in the first row or two in front of the screen on the sold out opening weekend of, say, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 with no other option (other than waiting to see the movie at a later time or date) and want to avoid needing to give out refunds to those who realize they don't like where they're sitting.

Its practical thing across world.

its not practical over here as there are no more ushers at the multiplex. So how on earth are they going to enforce it unless shows are sold out which rarely happens these days except for uber blockbusters in big markets and that too mostly for PLF shows. Especially in a 30 screen Plex !!! As someone posted above, people would buy the cheapest seat and then move to empty nicer one once the show starts.

Well that also happens practically. Depending on cinema staff, some allow to sit on other seat if lower capacity, if its full/fuller than you sit where you bought.

Does the reaction bumb on pre-sales get heavily affected about how good said reactions is? I know most of the times reactions are usually very positive no matter what but thinking like say Eternals reaction compared to a Shang-Chi type reaction? Or is the difference to small?

Yeeah baby, that’s the kind of microeconomic efficiency I love to see

In India, this is normal. Infact, in most civilized nations. Makes sense. You wanna watch a movie at the back then pay more for it. Entitled folks need to learn with times.

They used to do this in the UK for an extra fee. They called it VIP seats. It was 2 rows of seats that were more spacious and comfortable than the others. A lot of them reclined too.

I think very few people actually paid to sit in those seats. We would book normal tix and jump to the VIP chairs once the film started. I know a couple of my local cinemas discontinued the scheme and now the VIP seats are charged at normal rates. The reclining chairs were also removed (they were expensive to maintain and were all shipped to newer cinemas where all the seats recline).

AMC are being clever by not providing any seat functionality that would prompt audiences to "steal" seats other than location.
