Review-bombing WK is the dumbest thing ever cause the movie does everything right re:diversity - it doesn't appropriate European history but depicts African history, doesn't race and/or gender bend historical figures cause they are African historical figures, doesn't have token non-African Agojie, as for Dahomay slavery it doesn't gloss over it either (never trust trailers!), has an actual African actress in a co-lead role (Thuso Mbedu). Point being, if you don't like race-bending, historical appropriation, tokenism, than you have to be consistent and support movies that don't do it. But...you know.

maybe they should have made a black american story, there's plenty

This is gonna be a great week for me unless the bottom half screws me. Just need beast to collapse.

I'm expecting it to collapse, even lower than your $840K prediction. Weak w/w hold, pulled like half its theaters and showtimes, plus likely losing some potential audience overlap with WK. Easy 50% drop, I'm thinking more around 60%

The Woman King is likely going to have very good staying power between both glowing WOM (A+ CinemaScore) and the fact it doesn't have much in the way of direct competition coming up (majority of the wide releases over the next month or so are rated R). Wouldn't be shocked if it ends up having a similar run to Crawdads with everything it has going for it. Definitely a much-needed win for the box office after a dull several weeks.

Pearl and See How They Run are nonstarters as expected but Barbarian is looking at a rather strong hold. Headed for a nice little run for a movie that seemed to be dumped.

Looks like it will be sub-$20M for the weekend...

Edit to add: Deadline agrees with $18M estimate...https://deadline.com/2022/09/box-office-the-woman-king-viola-davis-1235120586/

Demo breakdown:

"As expected women are the majority at Woman King at 60% with 58% over 35 and 39% over 45, another promising sign for an older demographic that was reluctant to head out during the height of the pandemic. Black moviegoers turned out at 59%, with Caucasians at 19%, Latino and Hispanic at 12% and Asian/other at 10%. The Woman King saw its best business in the East and South where seven of the top ten runs came from. LA’s AMC Burbank and the Grove also ranked along with the Country Club in Chicago. PLF screens and Imax auditoriums are repping 43% of Woman King‘s weekend ticket sales at this point in time. Best markets were NY, Atlanta, DC, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Philly, Miami, Baltimore, Orlando, Detroit and Tampa."

And total weekend...

:All of these wide releases spell for a weekend that’s estimated at $51M for all titles. While +16% from last weekend, it’s the fourth worst weekend YTD."
