No it´s not the same ... with 90M OW [along the bad projections OS] the movie would probably die with 600M WW or less and lose money

With the numbers i mentioned, it can still be profitable despite not being as good as it could

We´re not comparing isolated numbers here like in a game, this doesn´t even make sense

Once upon a time, the MCU was the marquee of Hollywood, the IP that all studios are jealous of, the modern day Star Wars that is making current Lucasfilm look like a clown show. And now you think the Disney investors are happy that an MCU film can hopefully make small profits?

And the scary thing is that if GOTG 3 can barely make profits, imagine what a flop the next 3 MCU films could be.

it does make sense. The point was that expectations have been lowered so much that a film dropping $25M from its predecessor’s opening weekend despite ticket inflation is now seen as “decent.”

This forum would have called $120M an outright poor number until tracking made it look like it could be even worse.

The sports analogies being used are to illustrate that just because you’re way below expectations, climbing back up to merely below expectations is still a disappointment.

Outside of No Way Home and Doctor Strange 2 all CBM boxoffice for the past 3 years have been underperforming. Box office is still down 30% domestically from 2019 levels. Even worse at the global front with China shunning hollywood and Russian market gone. So gone are the days where a good CBM can get a sure 300m domestic/700m+ worldwide. This is not soley a Guardians thing.

YTD 2023

$2,647,867,589

YTD 2019

$3,959,557,577

The Batman didn’t underperform.

Based on peak Marvel, 120m OW is disappointing.

Based on tracking and super hero fatigue, 120m OW is a relief.

Look at Shazam 2.

If the WoM works, $120M would be a good opening number

I think for the future of the MCU, and superhero movies in general, it is way more important that Guardians 3 is well liked by the general audience and gets good legs rather than a huge opening and mediocre responses. Yeah $110-120m is not good, especially when compared to the previous one and how MCU third installments usually perform compared to the previous two first entries, but I think Quantumania really hurt the MCU brand so if Marvel can earn audience trust back with this and hopefully Secret Invasion, Loki Season 2 and The Marvels (even if they underperform) I think they are set for a good future.

I mean the number is shit in isolation and especially given that the movie rocks. But — that is what happens when you lose goodwill. The more important thing is that this will help regain goodwill and help BO of the next 10. And hopefully leg out very nicely 😆

Yeah pretty much. Can't really fault the film for the previous phase fucking up its potential.
