>Code Blue, the film adaptation of the popular TV drama, exceeded all expectations, delivering the third-biggest opening weekend ever for a domestic live-action film; and the biggest domestic live-action opening weekend since 2009. Despite a typhoon affecting western Japan over the weekend, the film still sold an outstanding 810,918 admissions over the weekend frame across 439 screens, and sold 1,164,744 admissions since opening on Friday.

Fuji TV announced that they expect the film to reach the ¥10 billion ($90 million) uber-blockbuster milestone, but projections from studios and TV stations are often very optimistic and on the very high-end of expectations for marketing purposes. However, they may not be far off the mark because of how well it did in the face of a big storm, and Monday's estimate is very impressive. It will probably finish around ¥8 billion ($70 million), but it could go a bit higher and enter the race against Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for the 2018 Yearly Crown.

Also, Code Blue makes the fourth film to debut above ¥1 billion in only seven months (most years have one, maybe two films do it in a year), a record number this decade and the most in such a short amount of time since the Hollywood blockbuster boon of 2002-2005.

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom falls to second place, but still delivered an excellent third weekend hold, and is now trailing its predecessor by 17% (down from 20% last week) after three weeks in release. It will likely continue to gain on the first film since it has Obon Festival in two weeks, so a total of ¥9 billion ($80 million) is looking very good right now, which should be enough for it to win the 2018 Yearly Crown, though it's not certain yet.

>Mirai of the Future held well in its second weekend, though did drop slightly more than Hosoda's Wolf Children (2012), 28% versus 24%. Of course, it's possible the typhoon may have impact it a bit. Its two-week total, however, is up 16% compared to Wolf Children, so I'd say it's aiming for a total between ¥3.5-4.0 billion ($30-35 million+). I know that's less than Wolf Children (¥4.22 billion), but I think the mixed-reception of Mirai will slow it down in the coming weeks.

>Pokemon: Everyone's Story also held well, and continues to almost mirror last year's film day-to-day so far. It opened 3% behind last year's film, and its third-week total is trailing by just 4%. I don't really see why it'll suddenly change course, so I'd say a total over ¥3 billion is locked, and it should get very close to ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+).

% changes versus same day last week.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 1st, has potential to be the biggest single day of 2018. We could see the day more than double Monday's estimates. A lot of urban theaters are close to achieving half-capacity for the whole day and it's only 4AM. Every Wednesday is Ladies' Day (women get discount tickets), but it's also the first of the month (national discount day, so everyone gets discounts), and we're in the middle of Summer.

To take advantage of this day, Incredibles 2 and Sensei Kunshun are opening tomorrow ahead of the weekend. Then on Friday, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, and the latest Kamen Rider open.

However... I don't believe any of the new films are going to take the #1 spot away from Code Blue. Incredibles 2 has very good pre-sales ahead of its first day, but Code Blue is beating it handily; and Mission Impossible 6 is very unlikely to beat it over the weekend.

% changes versus same day last week.

Wednesday wasn't quite as strong as I was anticipating, but it was still strong as we get closer to Obon Festival in less than two weeks.

Code Blue is showing no signs of frontloading that TV drama adaptations sometimes experience, and is definitely going to be a contender for the 2018 yearly crown now. I still believe Fuji TV's "expected" ¥10 billion total is too high, but ¥8/9 billion ($70-80 million+) is currently realistic.

Incredibles 2 had a good first day, but I was expecting a bit more. There's really no good comparisons to other Disney/Pixar films because of the Wednesday release, so we'll have to watch how it performs on a day-to-day basis before making any good comparisons. If anything, its first day likely suggests it's not going to breakout, really, and will probably finish around the norm of a Pixar film -- ¥4/5 billion ($40/50 million).

The first film grossed ¥5.26 billion, so if it can match/exceed that, it'd be a success... but it's very clear that Japanese audiences just aren't accepting of Pixar sequels. Aside from Toy Story 3, which benefited from Pixar establishing itself after the release of the first two Toy Story films, every Pixar sequel has dropped from its predecessor in the market.

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer lost its biggest amount of theaters yet on Wednesday, and it definitely felt the blow. I'll continue to track it for as long as I can, though, since it's the film Jurassic World 2 and Code Blue need to beat first, before possibly one another, to win the 2018 yearly crown.

So, good start for I2 in Japan, but not the best it could get. 40/50M is not a bad final number ... but I would have loved a bigger number, following the ww trend I2 is having (from 600M+ ww to 1.2B ww is almost doubling it's ww boxoffice from TI)

What can be expected for MI6 here? Last one did around 41m USD (correct me if im wrong), hoping Fallout can at least match that.

All MI movies have consistently grossed 5b yen  so thats the minimum we can start with. Max depends on how they receive in this crowded marketplace!!!

love that Fallen Kingdom is going to outgross Last Jedi even though Force Awakens made more than JW

When it's all said and done FK will end up dangerously close to TLJ ww. Extrapolate the  drops from their predecessors and JW3 is likely to crush SW9 WW and NA won't be able to save SW next time.

Wonder what was paramount thinking of? Obon Festival week starts on 13th of this month and MI is releasing  on 3rd in crowded market place like this.

According to Corpse, films can thrive together quite well during this busiest movie-going period. MI5 also released one week before Obon Festival in 2015 and had to deal with Jurassic World releasing the same weekend.
