best movie of the year so far, sorry Logan

Also kinda stunning a big budget(150m? 200m?) movie with a 2 hour and 44 minute runtime barely had any action in it.  I thought this was 2017. :rulez:

This is the year of dark, slow paced-blockbuster masterpieces. Logan, War for the Planet of the Apes and now Blade Runner 2049. Yearly box office might be down but the quality certainly isnt.

weird some people are saying it was too long

I was totally engrossed and never bored

I think there was one point for a couple of seconds where I was like "man this is feeling pretty long" but then some cool shit happened and I was back on the wagon.

For the exposition fest that was much of the movie, entire middle chunk is a good actor explaining. 5 minutes. Entirely unnecessary. Looked gorgeous though. This was cool in the sense that it touches on better, more streamlined sci-fi movie themes at every turn. A lot of everything kind of signifying little. Looked incredible and very well performed. But, got very bored when I realized it was never really going to examine anything. Make a stance on anything. Ponderous to a fault.

Kept thinking when's the Luke Scott Netflix stream coming? Felt more Luke than Denis to me. Like an improved Morgan. Sans Deakins, I don't know what this is... Maybe that's the twist? Luke Scott was first unit and Denis Villeneueve was second unit.

It was Road to Perdition for me. Expected a bit more.

Based off early evening estimates, Alcon/Sony’s Blade Runner 2049 via Warner Bros. is looking at a Thursday night in the vicinity of $3.5M. As we always footnote on these uber-early estimates, that number can go higher or lower, but there’s a feeling that ticket sales could push to $4M by the end of tonight. Note, this evening forecast does not come from Warner Bros.

I still think Dunkirk is the best looking/shot movie of the year, bar none.

2049 felt like basic Deakins. Nothing impressed me or gave me goosebumps, except maybe the watery climax.

Really liked it; wasn't bothered by the length, honestly.

I'm a bit dumb so lots of confusing parts I'm going to have to read about tomorrow.

Score good in parts, very pretty though I'm surprised myself to say I still think Dunkirk might have it.

I liked it.  Won't say much more than that right now as I have to get to sleep.

But I will say I'm not sure how this will play with audiences as two people walked out about halfway through and didn't come back.

Looks like length and slow pace is killing the movie for general audience. Too many complains already regarding length and pace of the movie.

So fucking good. Easily the best sci-fi film since Arrival and Ex Machina (I still liked those slightly more). It's the type of film that requires multiple viewings to really get everything and I can't wait to experience it again.

Was incredible in the Dolby ATMOS theater.

Oh yeah, highly recommend revisiting the final cut of the original and watching all 3 shorts before going to see this. Watched the shorts a couple hours before leaving and they felt like those videos you see waiting in line/in cue at Universal/Disney. Had me even more hyped for the main event.

They don't spoil anything and help with the world building even more.

I can see some of that happening.  I don't think it will be rampant, but the people leaving and even one of the ushers asked us as we left the theater if the movie felt like it was long.  The people that answered said no, but like you said, it appears to be an issue already out there
