Plus it sounds like kids in the US go to R rated movies regardless. Never really understood why studios were so terrified of that rating.

Kids may go to R rated movies anyway, but they buy a ticket for a PG-13 movie then go in to the R rated movie. So the the money goes to a different movie.

The reason cesspool is doing well is because of the HUGE marketingcampaign that made the movie look different and appealing. I know people who have never heard of a cesspool movie in the r life who were excited to see it. Also it definitely would have done better if it was pg13.  My brother is 13 and he and all his friends wanted to see the movie but can't. The illegal ddownloads for this will be HUGE.

No it wouldn't. Being the superhero movie with swears and blood is its main appeal.

lol, the unapologetic, crude vulgarity and humor was one of the biggest selling points, not to mention the unexpected high quality and the pandering to the rabid fanbase with a purist version of Deadpool helped immensely.

Plenty of pg-13 movies with heavy marketing flop on their fat face.

6th biggest IMAX preview per Deadline:

Deadpool‘s preview night on IMAX  pulled in $2.3M, for a per screen of $6,200.  That’s the best ever for an Imax February release or R-rated title; sixth biggest ever, ahead of Furious 7 and behind Iron Man 3.

To be fair, if a movie like Deadpool became a dime a dozen, it wouldn't be anywhere as successful. Plus you limit your audience quite a bit. Not just teenagers and kids, but many times their parents as well. The lack of R-rated tentpoles allows movies like Deadpool to hit the zeitgeist every once in a while.

Yup, that helped tremendously. IM sure there are some dumb parents that will still take their kids to see it and then complain but this is a movie for adults and they showed out.
