I supect they are scrambeling to try to find some way of paying a final tribute to Sondheim in the film, Don't know if that is possible, though, given how little time there is. nah i was at the premiere they've already added all of the characters waving goodbye to a CG sondheim in the final scene. 1

That was soine damn fast work, if you are not kidding. Though I think a simple "TO Stephan" at the start or finish would have been better. Of course Spielberg would deliver with a musical Idk, I still think the footage we’ve seen feels like it offers nothing that we can’t already see in the 1961 movie. Maybe there’s some surprises but it gives major “what’s the point of this?” vibes.

We’ve had a long stretch of moving musicals that have not done well, critically and/or commercially. The genre really needs a success.
Cap
Also the way to properly play tribute to Sondheim would be to cut I Feel Pretty, since he hates that song 🤣🤣🤣

Your film isn't more genuine because a chunk of the audience don't understand portions of it. I even watch English movies with subtitles a lot of the time. For a film that already didn't need to exist I'm not sure it helps sell it idk. Edited December 2, 2021 by thedast

Maggie
Ansel has done it again! But are people in the mood for a musical in these dark times? 100M would be a spectacular result. Hoping for more
Maggie
Gotta say i find it funny that critics blasted Ghostbusters: Afterlife for nostalgia overload, while they give this remake glowing reviews...

I think Ghostbusters Afterlife’s problem was fan-service wink wink remember this?! type stuff, rather than nostalgia. And a film version of a stage musical isn’t really nostalgic. BadOlCatSylvester
Glad to see that Spielberg still has it in him. If any movie has a chance to coexist with Spidey, it's this one.
filmlover
FWIW this has been selling relatively well for next weekend looking around. Obviously this is gonna be much more popular on the coasts than in Middle America, but seems safe to say this will easily post the best opening of all the musicals this year. If they called it East Side Story, and keept referencing West Side Story, and bringing characters from the original as a nostalgia bait, then it would be a fair comparison. Total lock for more disappointing box office run. Like the cliff that went off, damn; almost makes me wonder if it was WSS hit job to clear them out of the Oscar race 😂😂😂

Wouldn't call it "decent," but it certainly did better than all HBO Max movies outside of GvK and Dune.
