If TFA loses the record (which is looking likely), Star Wars is going to have a hard time gaining it back now. Hopefully Lucasfilms treats it as an extreme challenge and ups their game. Competition, even from within, is never a bad thing.

How is it not? It spends a lot of the time calling white people colonists and literally ignoring white characters for actions that happened hundreds of years ago whilst audiences are like 'omg such an important movie'

NO

if i made a film called white knight and had scenes where the heroes ignored black guys for lets say being a big factor as to why homicide is so high in USA it wouldnt sit too well.

Black Panther is a good movie but lets not act like it was a really important movie and not a little racist, dont be blind.

Bullshit. Just alt-right nonsense.

European madmen centuries ago almost annihilated (And in some cases succeeded) several indigenous people in several parts of the world. It's easy for you to sit down where ever you are to dismiss this but the truth is the truth. The effects of colonialism are still being felt today and frankly it's hilarious that you feel that the people who have been violated should just ignore this. For decades, western pop culture erased mentions of minorities, where were you guys when this nonsense happened?

Let's not even talk about segregation, one drop laws and more recently  "southern strategy" in the US which pretty much dehumanized black Americans. Its stuff like this that makes the anti-identity politics crowd look stupid because its always bern anout identity politics. So quoting ridiculous crime statistics doesn't help your case one bit.

Minorities celebrating themselves after centuries of oppression shouldnt offend anyone except the most petty of people (i still dont understand why some idiots get riled up at gay pride too).Black Panther was a celebration of black people and Africa, something that people like you are firmly opposed to because you feel excluded. Anyway, the world is changing and people like you will no place in a modern multi cultural society.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited by Infinity War's opening and I don't want to derail the thread because of one poster's bigoted drivel.

Avengers 4 could be to Avengers 3 what PotC3 was to PotC2.

Could also happen. Though POTC3's decrease was also due to it being a Wednesday opener; but still, I could see A4 take a similar drop to POTC3. Right now, I really feel like that movie is a big wildcard.

The ending had many people groaning at my showing yesterday.

Trust me: that's more positive than you might think :P A similar thing happened at my showing, with a lot of WTF-like shock coming from the audience... some people were even sobbing. But everyone, from what I could hear, seemed to like it and probably would like to know what follows. (Unless your fellow attendees genuinely disliked the movie, but I feel like the conclusion stretch wouldn't change someone who was already into it's mind a whole lot)

@somebody85 After TLJ, I dunno what would it take for Star Wars to break the record again. Maybe a 10 year separation between Eps. IX and X, and X promotes the return of the then-old, now-new cast (Rey, Finn, Poe, etc.) next to another brand new cast alas Force Awakens? Plus, by whenever that comes out, inflation would be a lot higher, I presume.

I kind of agree but stranger things have happened and JJ is probably going to really amp up the first teaser for this one. If it offers nothing new, everything's hidden in the marketing again aka mystery box writing and Luke isn't back in a big role....no way. But even if it surprises everyone and looks amazing, I still think there's only a super slight chance.

TFA had EVERYTHING going for it. The hype going into that thing was immeasurable and that was with Luke, Han, Leia and not knowing what their roles would be.

This won't have that and I dunno what SW film in the future could come close to the anticipation of TFA now that those characters are gone.

If Han and Luke were still alive, I'd say it has a chance but they blew that by killing them off.

Whatever number this may end, I really now think it will be too big for any other movie.

Until another movie comes along and does break it. That's the game, dog.

But anyway, credit where it's due: I thought TFA still had this record for a while.

Come now. Star Wars fans forgot the Prequels enough to show up at the next (albeit a decade plus later) to the tune of $2b+

You people are crazy to think Disney is going to wait 10 years between SW movies.

Disney is going to make SW movies every year or every 2 years from now on.

Yes, but they had Han, Luke, and Leia...

It's why I think the ones saying the next series that could blow up box office would be the Harry Potter series 1-2 decades from now getting all the old actors/actresses playing all the old roles (and still getting to be heroes, while they pass the torch)...that would be untouchable for years...

Seeing IW again in just under 4 hours in another full cinema bar the front row, last time I saw it was in IMAX 3D where the audience I was with clapped at the end which almost NEVER happens here in the UK, last time I remember clapping is with The Force Awakens, not even claps with The Last Jedi. Crazy!

Episode IX likely won’t get the OW record.  But it’s like Brazil stepping onto the field during a World Cup, it at least has to be considered a threat to do so

So..... does that mean that it'll pull a 7-1 loss if it makes sub-200M? :P (I don't think it'll come sub 200, but I don't see much higher than Jurassic World numbers either tbh... I really don't think it has much of a hook, and it'll only pull 200 exclusively cause it's Star Wars and that brand alone is enough to cause mass hysteria).

It'll be at #2 on OW alone ;) Sadly for those who prefer IW to BP quality-wise (I think I liked BP a little more, but I enjoyed the fucking hell out of IW), it'll probably peak at #2, as I don't see it beating BP even with the record breaking OW. But I've seen stranger things, so..... yeah.

It should, but this will be a long, long time from now. Not 2 years and 4 months later.

This movie was the perfect setup for this record. It took Marvel 10 years and all those individual movies from its character and hints and story lines for this one.

This movie still has a lot in its tank for today Sunday. We may see another historic day and this movie may end up at $260 million weekend. I will not be shocked if it gets there......actually I will be.... :hahaha:
