Huh, it already beat it though.

I mean you can adjust a 70 year old film for inflation which is from a time without home cinema which has spent over 12x as long in cinema and re-released over 8x but what would be the point of that?

I just hope you keep this argument in mind and don't try to pull out adjusted numbers when something not made by Cameron inevitably does beat Avatar WW. :)

If that does happen it will be a 1 year blip in jims current 21 year domination then back on top again. No biggie.

I won't say there's no possible way Avatar 2 will outgross Avatar. I mean, Cameron has been known to do the impossible.

I just personally can't imagine how he'd pull it off.

China, that how

Does anyone even have a fondness for Avatar? It feels like a movie that no one cares about any more.

Peter Rabbit hit a higher multiplier than Zootopia a few days back (albeit with 1/3rd the bo). Looking at films that grossed 100+ dom in recent years that's mega impressive. It's 4.58x (114.6) right now and is keeping steady on theater count. Last weekend was 0.2m. It has the dollar bump remaining and will easily hit 4.6x (115).

It, in it's intial run had de facto 0% of any overseas market except the UK and  the other Commonwealth countries, and Latin America. Somethhing to do it opened in the US just a couple months after World War 2 started.

It's timing for opening in France was not too great:May 1940....

I'm still confused as to why Sony hasn't announced a sequel yet, especially with those legs.

I think the sooner they announce it the better. 3 year gap would be too much imo. 2020 could see both PR2 and Poopmoji2 (that one after all did 4.3x+ it's 50 prod budget globally)

Honest question to @baumer (as the person who had the theory yesterday about increased demand because of discounts on tuesday big movies not countering the value of the discount), or to anyone who cares to explain. If that theory is true, shouldn't it get a smaller drop compared to the rest of the movies today? I was pretty convinced by the theory yesterday, but this has put me in doubt.

If anything, IW's worldwide performance give even more evidences on how Avatar 2 could outgross Avatar worldwide, performance in developing markets will be insane.

imo, looking at the size of numbers it's posting 28% is surprisingly good. I was sure it would fall 30%+, possibly 35%.

There is a very simple explanation as to why Avatar ends up in BOT's discussions...

I'm not just taking about box office though. In terms of box office talk Avatar is like video game graphics talk regarding Crysis a decade ago, it is by far the most talked about movie currently in box office, it shows up almost on every weekend discussion of a big blockbuster here.

I'm talking about the constant "cultural irrelevancy", "No one cares" talk, if a movie is truly irrelevant, then surely no one will bring it up. It is curious then how there's constant talk out "Avatar is not relevant" as if people are talking it into being true.

People do like Avatar. Idk if the sequels are gonna be the same lightning in a bottle the first one was, especially after years of waiting where landmarks Avatar was known for are either dying (3D cinema) or have evolved a lot (VFX/motion capture) but most of the time I hear it come up in public it's well regarded.
