I think people are overreacting to a single ugly drop. Let's just wait and see how it goes. Legs like Catching Fire will get it to 455, like Ralph 2 gets it to 447.

it's a good number though I remember some people went a little overboard and expected 550-600m

You are talking about the sequel to a Disney mega smash while they are on an unprecedented BO run.  Nobody would have been surprised if Frozen 2 made 550-600m.

No one surprised yes, but expecting it and being hohum about it not happening are two different things. Many of us tried explaining why hoping for it to become only the 2nd animated film to top 500m was unrealistic but no, we were just being negative and not bowing to the Disney throne.... 🤦‍♂️ everyone that was on that train refused to consider why I2 made that much and put Frozen in a completely different arena gross wise. Instead its following the path most of us on the lower end thought ending up in the 440-480 camp with Dory. Its not a loss at all.

Now that Jumanji is set to bomb next week can we discuss Black Christmas being number 1? $30 million opening, over or under?@DeepWang?

Black Christmas presales arent worth talking about from the handful of comments in the tracking thread about the lack of.

Jumanji would be an ultra bomb if it somehow managed to drop to #2 against a Christmas horror which also has a back track record. Lol

Little Women is the perfect movie to open on Christmas Day tbh and as was already said they probably wanted at least one week of PLF screens before Star Wars locks them up for a few weeks (I'm guessing 1917 is the next movie set to take over PLF screens when it expands wide in January). Besides, Cats is already the one opening against Star Wars for the counterprogramming money (though most of its audience is likely waiting until Christmas passes to see it anyway).

Studios do seem to like to schedule two different movies in December just in case one doesn't do so well, WB had The Mule and Aquaman last year and next year has Dune and Tom and Jerry.

Usually it's more because they're aimed at different audiences. Jumanji should appeal more to boys while Little Women will appeal more to girls. Universal is also putting out Black Christmas (young females), Cats (females + families/fans of musicals), and in a limited bow 1917 (males + older audiences) this month as well.
