Thanks for finding / compiling that mate. Appreciate it.

So Avatar is still #1 globally ;)

Although I suspect the population of the Endgame countries is more... due to it having China + India

EG earned $445 million more than Avatar in those two countries, if it wasn't for the explosive growth of the Chinese market and their appetite for Marvel EG isn't in the game when it comes to #1. Let's see how Avatar II does in China in comparison.

Most of those red highlighted countries have had huge expansion since 2009. They are mostly Asian and laten American markets.

China - I cant find an exact admissions figure but we know the expansion is huge

Mexico - 180m admissions in 2009, 332m admissions in 2018

India - admissions in general haven't increased but Hollywood market share has taken a massive increase since 2009

Indonesia - screen count has more than doubled since 2012 and box office is starting to take off. Wouldnt be surprised if Indonesia becomes a big player in the next 10 years.

Cant be bothered to go all through but it seems endgame has taken advantage of all these newly developed markets whereas Avatar remained on top in the markets with less growth.

You're right, with exchange rates it's closer to 2.4b, which up until a few weeks ago would have still been the highest grossing movie of all time. I'm guessing we are going to ignore inflation and the 40% market growth though yeah? Because when factoring everything in the gross doesn't do Avatar enough justice, its higher than 3b.

You keep bringing up Alice in Wonderland but ignore how Johnny Depp was at the peak of his popularity in 2010 and no longer a draw by 2016 after the law suits and string of flops. The movie had a change of director, smaller budget and less prominent marketing campaign and poor reviews. A big drop was all but obvious. 1b is a tough challenge and you're right, Disney is the exception to this rule and guess who's distributing Avatar 2? Oh that's right, Disney. I cant imagine any scenario where their marketing campaign fails so bad that Avatar opens low enough to only gross 250m domestically during the holiday, you can't seriously believe that yourself. You're essentially saying it will perform like Justice League

As for China I find it hard to believe that franchise films like transformers, fast and furious and Avengers from 2009/2012 to now  can all increase 500-1000% but here you have avatar with a rather muted 100% increase. Wheres the logic here?

When factoring in everything Avatar would have grossed more than 3 billion ... according to YOU and Avatar defenders. This is nonsense. Avatar is the least popular top tier highest grossing movie - with the lowest admissions ever.

First you claim that Alice was a 1b grosser due to 3D and now it's cause of Johnny Depp?  You can't have it both ways. I'm comparing it to Avatar because they are very similar. Both had a crappy/forgettable script and mainly sold well due to the 3D gimmick. Since Avatar is considered a bad movie and no one is looking for a sequel - there is a good chance that A2 will decline like Alice.  Disney only gets 1 billion grossers with their nostalgia appealing live action remakes and the mcu, everything else is a bust. Mary Poppins which many thought would do at least 400 million domestically ended up bombing and that was a holiday release. Plenty of blockbusters don't even reach 250 million (detective pikachu, godzilla, rampage etc.) A2 won't be an exception.

Transformeras, fast and furious and avengers all continued to make movies and grow their audience. Avatar has been completely forgotten about. That's why it wont increase more than I predicted.

Fine instead of saying Avatar would have made 3b today let's switch it around, would have Endgame made 2.78b back in 2009? No. Would have fast and furious 7 made 1.5b back in 2009? No

I can have it both ways, it's not unheard of for a film to have multiple things going for it to drive it to success. You're making the mistake of using your personal opinion of a film to make a judgement which is never a good idea. I'd actually agree with you about Avatars corny dialogue and paint by the numbers script but what you fail to realise is these simple storylines reasonate so well with foreign audiences and simple dialogue is a lot easier to translate worldwide. Titanic had some corny dialogue too and look what that achieved.

Mary Poppins? Why are you bringing up Mary Poppins? Anyone who thought Mary Poppins was making 400m was delusional, the original doesn't even adjust to that, who the hell cared for Mary Poppins except for a few grandparents here and there who were happy to wait for a DVD release? Nothing about Mary Poppins looked like a 400m blockbuster. Avatar is not Mary Poppins FFS and it certainly doesnt belong in the same sentence as Ramgage, Godzilla and detective Pikachu

I was in the pub last night and one person mentioned Avatar and the others started shouting and doing impressions of the characters, and touching their hair against each other, and they all said avatar was awesome. These are people who do not watch films, go to the cinema maybe once every couple of years. Weren't aware of sequels until I mentioned it. It's clearly left an imprint in them.

lol. so he wasn't joking.

the title Avatar was given by a 90s Indian actor who as per him was given the title role of the film.

I liked Govinda when I was in high school. But even I was surprised by this statement. I remember Amrish Puri was very famous that even Steven Spielberg cast him in Indiana Jones....

Just had a nightmare. Was on an event where they previewed Avatar 2 footage and all the animals were talking like in a Disney movie! Never did waking up felt so good...

God I don't think I would sleep well ever again after that nightmare.

Thank god we live in a reality where Disney have 0 creative control over Avatar, getting their grubby fingers on it is the worst thing that could happen.

@HeadShot are you secretly JCS? 😂

Finally the mods realized it was over 2 years away because it's been delayed like every year half a decade. Batman will come out before it and it's on the lot. Only fair. Really hope they stick with 2021. 6 year delay is enough

Orson Welles once said films are never really finished, they escape.

Welles said that if it were not for studio pressure..they want to start getting money back on their investment..some directors would work on a film forever and never get around to actually releaseing it. I suspect Cameron is one of those.
