Mission: Impossible - Fallout | July 27 2018 | Paramount | Reactions coming in | "Best action movie since Fury Road"

Recommended Posts

Let's face it: The last three Mission Impossible movies have all been really good. MI3, from 2006, is arguably the best of all of them, it's badly underrated. It suffered at the box office because Tom Cruise's public persona was taking a drubbing from all the Scientology talk in the tabloids and a general perception of overall weirdness. But that movie is really good, as are the two released since then.

Really, four of the five Cruise MI's are really good, only the second one falls short of that, and it's not bad.

Quality has never been the problem with the Cruise MI movies. They rise and fall with how wacky Cruise's public image is at any given time. They are Cruise movies in the mind of the public, not "MI" movies per se.

Are pre-sales indicating a huge breakout or just a bit higher than the last one?

Maybe they should have waited to drop the embargo this week. Get the fresh "dark knight, fury road" headlines going into the weekend.

I really don't think that Fury Road comparisons have any impact on GA. They go by previews and WOM. That kind of hyperbole is more for core fans.

And that will be hurdle to overcome when Paramount decides to reboot the series.

They chose poorly with cinematic casting of Jack Ryan post Harrison Ford(who wanted to do a third but some studio head said no--head scratcher).

Cruise is MI. I wonder how many of the general audience could tell you the lead characters name if they didn't just walk out of the movie.

I'm stoked for this!!

I'm sorry. Are you saying Rogue Nation had a higher percentage with Top Critics than 100% with an 8.8 average rating? Or, did I misread that.

I think he meant Rogue Nation also had a Top Critics score higher than the overall score.

It probably won't last, but the fact that this is better reviewed than BP right now is completely insane considering this movie isn't breaking any ceilings in the industry or anything like that. Just a straight up action movie, and a sixth one in a franchise at that.

But BP is the the eighteenth movie in a franchise.  :redcapes:

Wait, wait. I keep reading that Tom Cruise essentially did all of his stunts? I assumed that he simply did more than most do but hardly all. Is this the case? Cruiser was diving out of the back of place take after take?

Yep, he does all his own stunts, including the HALO jump. It's been that way for awhile now. He's essentially the American Jackie Chan (minus the martial arts expertise). Even got his helicopter lisence and flew some crazy dangerous manuevers. He's fucking insane. It absolutely pays off, everything is filmed without the need to hide his stunt double.

He's done crazy shit in the past but it's taken to another level in this.

Bless this man. Surprised he doesn't sustain injuries much more often.

Thanks for that. The themes do seem similar but hopefully that's where it ends in comparison. Spectre failed to dazzle in plot and action. Something I don't think Fallout will have a problem with and hopefully its runtime is justifiable. If its more exciting than the last 2 bond films then we are all in for a treat.

You mentioned Solomon Lane. He is the character I'm so interested in. It seems like Hunt needs his help this time. Hopefully there is more to this than meets the eye.

It's considerably better than Skyfall and Spectre.

Casino Royale and Fallout might be a fair fight though. Fallout wins on spectacle, but Casino Royale is a really good distillation of Bond and who he is and how he came to be. 🤔
