BATMAN V SUPERMAN WEEKEND THREAD | 166.01M OW, New March OW Record. 420.4M WW OW.

Recommended Posts

A rebooted Batman vs a rebooted Superman that got mixed reactions from his own movie that also happens to be a direct sequel to that movie is about to open with 170M. And lets not forget the brutal critical reception. This two brands are a monster.

Iron man opened to $102 million in 08 with no 3D. He was a b list character and not very known. Say what you want about critical reception and momentum of sequels but bvs opening to under 170 is poor in context

the-numbers.com is pretty pessimistic about BVS. At one point they predicted 250m dom for the movie (http://www.the-numbers.com/news/211950830-2016-Preview-March).

Now they feel there's a chance of sub-350m dom.

I have no idea who's they guy that incharge of The-Numbers, but he hated the movie weeks before the release
Infact I remember he wrote "I have no interest seeing this movie"

Really expected this to do better. A film with 3 of DCs most popular characters together for the first time can't even out gross a film with just iron man(iron man 3)

Civil War needs to hit $200m opening weekend then by that logic. Basically the same cast as two films that did $1bn+ worldwide.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't or even gets close to it say 190+ plus I think it will fly past a billion especially with the addition of Spider-Man

BvS opened just fine coming off a critical slaughter. The glowing reviews actually boosted IM and THG openings. BvS had that very important factor going against it. This is on an even bigger level than Bayformers, which ultimately speaks to the power of the brands.

Ha The Numbers, I haven't clicked on that site since 2003 when they predicted $15m total for Freddy vs. Jason and it did $36m opening weekend.

If BvS doesn't beat HP:DH2's 169M OW....as WB's biggest opener.....then we have to wait even longer for another one of WB's mega tentpoles to top that.

It will. WB will fudge it if needed. I'm thinking Fantastic Beasts could come over 150m over the weekend if for no other reason than the 5 year hiatus since the last movie. I'm guessing it will be like TPM, not critics wise, but with the fans hungry for something new. And I have a feeling the fanbase just increased in these 5 years. The books are still in Top 3 New York Times Bestsellers List 9 years after the release of the last book.

Yep, anything under $200m opening weekend will be a disappointment going by the logic on display this weekend.

I'm inclined to say I agree. CW is certainly grossing more than Deadpool too, and that's something I don't see it happen with BvS domestically.

Watching this today. I'm actually really excited to see how bad this film is. This never happens to me. I actually think with the sad Ben affleck video and all the hilariously bad reviews that it's giving this movie a lot of publicity. Execs won't know whether to fire zack or shake his hand lol

170m is fine — or at least decent enough for WB to save some face after those reviews. Once again some people on the forum build up absurd box office expectations and are inevitably disappointed. I wonder if that condition has a name.

WB need to fastrack that solo Batman movie. As the only superhero I have modicum of interest in it's rather annoying that he's already condemned to another DC universe Snyder mess.

THG adjusts to $167m, and this, without 3D, BVS is barely going to surpass this even with 3D? Katniss really sold more tickets than the 3 most popular heroes of history? Yeah, I would say that she remains the Queen.

I may not have liked MJ1 but at least it had a coherent plot. BvS can't say the same.

IM3 came after Avengers euphoria. BvS is coming after mixed received MoS and it has been the most prejudged film ever. I was expecting a bit more too (Ultron territory), but critics have destroyed that chance. I am not saying that BvS could have managed SW7 opening. Probably, not even TA or JW. But I think the gap relative to Ultron opening could have been quite smaller if the viciousness had not been so big. Do people think that difference in quality between IM3 vs Ultron and BvS is really 79% vs 75% vs 31%? It is a bad joke.

Precisely.... IMO BvS was similar in quality to MoS, IM3 and AoU.... and much better than IM2.
