Not sure who would be a good fit for a cameo. Could do Hawkeye, of course.

If it's an "origin" period story, there's scope for Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Winter Soldier, Agent Coulson, Maria Hill, Jasper Sitwell, even a very old Peggy Carter! 😁

Hawkeye is the no-brainer.

A wildcard I would find an interesting addition to this or any Black Widow film would be Mockingbird(recast from Agents of Shield)

Madam Hydra/Viper as a villain would be interesting. I know that the MCU history is that HYDRA went completely underground after WWII, with Arnim Zola secretly running it from within SHIELD, and they were assumed to no longer exist at all until the revelations of TWS, but I still would like to see Ophelia show up as an antagonist somehow.

Madame Hydra was done on Agents of Shield, though not sure if that would stop them.

A role for Shang-Chi is possible. The characters operated in similar worlds; Black Widow was in Russian intelligence then US intelligence, Shang-Chi defected to the UK and worked for British intelligence.

The character's backstory may get Americanised in the details, but an appearance would still be a neat set up for his own movie the following year. A director has been assigned to Shang Chi so he could be in on the casting process for a Black Widow role.

Black Widow vs Fu Manchu (Shang Chi's father) would be a hell of a storyline! 😮 Somehow though I doubt such a stereotypical evil Oriental crimelord would appeal to Marvel producers. 😁

Fu Manchu is almost certainly not going to be in the MCU, for two reasons. First, the obvious reason you brought up. Second, he is obviously not a character created by Marvel, and he is not in the public domain; the early books are, but the estate of Sax Rohmer still asserts ownership of the Fu Manchu character (much like the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate with Tarzan and John Carter of Mars). Marvel/Disney are not going to fork over money to another party, who will likely impose their own restrictions on how the character is to be portrayed, just so they can include someone who will piss a bunch of people off and cause controversy. Best not to open that can of worms at all.

Reason #2 is also why Fu Manchu is almost never mentioned by name in the comics anymore. Marvel had been using the character under license, and that license expired. (In fact, reading Shang-Chi’s Wikipedia page, it says that at one point they retconned that Fu Manchu wasn’t even Shang-Chi’s father’s real name/identity.)

Yeah, Fu Manchu was retconned out as Shang-Chi's father, same for his half-brother(whose moniker I forget).

Marvel did come to an agreement with the estate of Rohmer to reprint the famed Master of Kung-Fu series recently. They up front stated that the series would be initially collected as 4 Omnibus. They are now doing them in more broken up story arcs under the EPIC line of deluxe trade paperbacks. Not sure how long the publishing deal lasts but its been at/over 2yrs now. So at least when the film hits there will be material out there for people to find.

Sometime between Civil War and Endgame is more interesting to me than pre-Avengers at least. Allows side characters to be relevant to the present more easily, and means the Natasha we see on screen is closer in development to when we’ve recently seen her.

That link has serious spoilers btw, don’t think you’re allowed to post it.

Damn Kevin Feige and Company for not letting me just end my investment into the MCU with "Endgame!"
I wish we had gotten this movie instead of "Captain Marvel," especially if it's going to be set before the final events of Phase III, as surely Marvel Studios realizes people will WTF if this one doesn't connect beyond what we've already seen, right??

It would be really... odd... but what if this movie is one where we get to explore the Soul Realm?

It would definitely allow for a character development-style film where we see big points in her past play out and lead up to... God knows what (resurrection 🤔?)

Wait...does that mean Chris Evans might be in it? That’d be great, but it also might not feel like a BW solo movie then. It’d be like a reverse Winter Soldier. Maybe it’ll be about what she did before joining Cap and Falcon.
