The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

The R rating will obviously slash part of the general audience. Kids won't be watching Joker.

I could see Joker performing like Venom or Logan, at least regarding domestic numbers. It won't have China to boost overseas grosses, though. So, more or less 210/226 million domestic + 300 million overseas. So, 550 million worldwide might happen.

I think word of mouth won't be great, the movie will be very divisive and the opening will be frontloaded as hell.

It won't be very divisive, even in US, Cinemascore may depend on how "feel good" movie is, but WOM doesn't. If it's great, it'll find its audience. General audience doesn't care about politics and that was one of the only "divisive" points among critics.

US was super divisive. Joker definitely looks to be divisive.

Once again seeing impressive Thursday sales and (relatively) not so impressive Friday #s.

Joker Thursday:

Theaters: 260 (+1)

Showings: 3484 (+232)

Tickets Sold: 43717 (+9483) (43% of TLK at the same point) (61% of TLK's pace at the same point)

Tickets Available: 508254 (+18773)

Estimated ATP: 12.53 (-0.11)

Estimated Total Sales: 547734 (+115125)

Estimated Nationwide Sales: 4.7 million (+1 million)

Joker Friday:

Theaters: 259 (+1)

Showings: 4328 (+1076)

Tickets Sold: 38095 (+9916) (31% of TLK at the same point) (37% of TLK's pace at the same point)

Tickets Available: 677720 (+116929)

Estimated Total Sales: 455716 (+114543)

Estimated Nationwide Sales: 3.9 million (+1 million)

Sticking with mid-80s. I don't see 100 happening with this sort of Friday sales.

Getting showtimes automatically is difficult with AMC...the website is much harder to write a script for than Cinemark as the website structure is very hard to see with inspect element.

Not sure how @keysersoze123 does it but I use Selenium to automate the browser, the software is found on https://www.seleniumhq.org/. Then if you know HTML, CSS, and Javascript you can use inspect element functionality on your web browser to figure out exactly what code you need to write to make the automated browser perform the desired tasks. If I get time I will post a longer explanation.

Woah... this afternoon/evening was EXCELLENT for Joker. Unfortunately I don't have any data for Venom as to how much it jumped on the Tuesday before its release (so who knows, this might be normal) but I was NOT expecting that!!!

HUGE increase today. Easily surpasses IT 2's daily increase, though I had to do that count a few hours early. But the lead is big enough that those few hours probably wouldn't close the gap. Looking at Aurora's numbers for IT 2 on Wednesday and Thursday, I'd guesstimate that the comp would adjust to high 7M - low 8M. And for TLK, somewhere in the low to mid 7M. Just two days until I'll actually be able to adjust!

Just FYI, I did the count at the usual time that I do. I just didn't have enough time to compile and post it.

Showings added: 44

Seats added: 3384

IT 2 comp: 7.76M

Lion King comp: 7.47M

Another big increase from yesterday. This time it was pretty even with what IT 2 did on the same day. Still nothing in Denver that would indicate double digit previews to me, even when guesstimating the adjusted comps. I don't think the adjusted comp would even be hitting 9M right now. But I'm not counting out double digits yet. IT 2 had a huge jump over the last two days. I think Joker can go even bigger.

UPDATE: Did one last check of some new numbers before going off to bed and I can already tell that tomorrow is going to be a GREAT day. 😎

I was a programmer in unix and so I do it in shell script. There is no way to automate as the page that shows the show list for a location does it after a refresh. So I do that manually. But that is one time activity.  Once you have the show list it can be automated. Its a dirty way of doing it but any refresh is just running a script.

Its not a rocket science. its just web scraping. once you have a page link its just pulling it and reading the data. Just look at page source to get the required information.

But let us keep it low key it could be shutdown if they change the code. I am not able to pull in from 3rd party sites like Fandango or Atom.

Ok, figured it out. First, it’s been 24 theatres not 22, only 3 have not been reporting but that hasn’t changed the whole time.

Total tickets across all the theatres (24) - 46641

I should add, that’s the total as of today, lots of new shows keep popping up so many don’t have a lot of tickets sold but either way that’s the total number of seats that will probably be available Thursday night.

Fandango is doable for me. It's just a question of runtime because there are so many theaters covered that it would be impractical to do them all and still be able to give daily reports. But if the runtime issue could be managed that would be an amazing source as pretty much all major theaters would be covered.

Joker Greater Philadelphia Area Seat Report T-2 and Counting

TOTALS 0 155 2,558 30,597 8.36%

Total Showings Added Today: 39

Total Seats Added Today: 4,642

Total Seats Sold Today: 546

Comp

2.786x of Once Upon 2 days before release (16.16M)

1.340x of It: Chapter Two 2 days before release (14.07M)

Adjusted Comp

3.116x of Hobbs & Shaw 2 days before release (18.07M)

Some of the comps going down seems like a bad thing. But with how high the movie sold beforehand, this stuff happens. And besides, it's a good thing as it narrows things down further. And yadda yadda, 10M+ previews are likely, yadda yadda sales looking great, all that jazz

Fandango would be awesome as its across chains. Even doing it for 4-5 top cities would give a macro perspective into the BO.
