The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this is the best place to mention this but I was looking at the showtimes for this weekend near me and I noticed that Dune has less showtimes than Venom at every theater in my area starting this Friday. I know it's got a longer runtime but I was still surprised to see it.

@EmpireCity are big chains not taking VPF fee, because couple of Indian films have taken advantage of that & released on bigger than normal size. Annaatthe is releasing on 415+ cinemas, ideally 175-200 be enough.

I think a lot of the VPF fees have gone away for good.

Eternals MTC2

Thursday:

Showtimes: 2661 (+66)

Seats Sold: 70007/383301 (+11255)

$ Sales: 945404 (+144039)

SC added 12200 per Keyser, but that was later in the night (and usually that is when Thursday has the surge). I had taken an SC run earlier in the day that was 8k in 23 hours. So this seems ok. Think its gonna just miss 10m though, high 9s seems more likely.

Friday:

Showtimes: 4873 (+85)

Seats Sold: 74268/736960 (+14434)

$ Sales: 934050 (+172214)

Kinda eh day (SC also added 14k-ish). I am tamping my weekend expectations down to high 70s for now.

4-5 theater in NYC/LA platform openings are useless right now when the audience that mostly powers them to such big numbers still haven't returned to theaters en masse. It would be a surprise if Spencer wasn't on PVOD by Thanksgiving.

Some may be concerned at the Black Widow drop, but Widow between T-2 and T-3 more than doubled in terms of ticket sales. A true explosion that most films just don't get, even at this time. T-2 to T-1 is about a 19% jump for Widow, so Eternals should hopefully be more manageable. Of course, that is easier said than done.

I don't know man, it's just not catching up when it comes to comps. Kind of a weird reoccurring pattern the past few weeks in fact. Maybe it's just my comps being set too high? Either way...I still have concerns on this movie here.

PS for previews is again tad below SC and OD is slightly above. I am also going to temper expectations. Its probably going to finish around 180K at MTC1 which wont be enough for 10m. Let us see how tomorrow goes. I am expecting slightly tepid walkups relative to SC due to mediocre reviews. Rest of the weekend I am expecting true friday to be around 23m and OW in low to mid 70s. Hope tomorrow's walkups push up these numbers.

Low 70s from 23m Fri? I don't see that happening. Sat PS are too strong and historically the Sat bump should be strong in Nov as well.

Not a lot of great comps, so doing something of a scattershot.  I reckon Shang-Chi is a pretty terrible comp in particular, but I'll throw it in anyway (it having the same length of pre-sales is a minor plus at any rate).  Gonna shift to T-x comps in a couple of days (which will slaughter most comps except for SC).

Wasn't able to keep up the momentum of yesterday locally, I'm afraid.  Eternals did about 70% of BW's T-2 and more or less matched pace with SC (the SC comp was hit a bit as this is when I found out there was an early access showing which added some already sold tickets to the total).  Naturally, the Let There Be Carnage comp is still outta whack, but I put it in anyway.

The relatively good news is that yesterday provided a decent amount of cushion, so we're back to needing almost exactly 80% of BW over the last two days for Sacramento to more or less point to 10m (80.24% of BW the rest of the way or 2725 tickets sold).  Not out of the realm of possibility, but there needs to be more days like Monday.  If they're like today or a little better, probably looking at something closer to 9.5m or 9.7m

Yeaaah, if Sacto is representative this isn't hitting 10m unless things turn around radically in walkups tomorrow.  9.5m looks like the target, though with MTC2 hiking prices that should bump things up a bit, so 9.7m could be in the cards.

One interesting thing is the percent of seats sold.  Eternals is aksually at the highest percentage of seats sold of all four movies here.  Its problem is, just not enough showtimes to go around (which is also the lowest of all four movies), which is almost certainly thanks to the double whammy of film length and staffing shortages (particularly on weekdays). Though I'm sure the less-than-stellar reviews ain't helping convince some theaters to squeeze out an extra showing here and there.

Has some implications for the internal multiplier if the WOM is good enough.

(Should be noted that Let There Be Carnage was just the opposite with short length and 4pm previews, so it shouldn't be too surprising to see V2 just lap right past it.)

I am confused by Eternals.  Everytime I think I have the box office pegged on it I am wrong. This time I felt yesterday it was looking like a 10M+ preview headed to 80 to 85M OW. To me that means it has shrugged off the "mixed" reviews and the slow down in sales and should have good walkups and pretty good legs based off that. So maybe 210-230 domestic total in that case.

Now the updated figures are indicating 9.5 to 10M previews and 75 to 80M. It may not seem a lot but to me that seems like the mixed reviews are still lingering and pace has slowed and indicates walkup might be not great also. That might cut down the domestic gross to 190 to 210M .

Just have to wait and see tomorrow I think to pick 1.
