I wonder why it did so much better than Rough Night.

They both play on the Bad Moms' theme.

Better ratings and better concept...

Spoiler

the protagonists killing someone is hard to make funny...once that whole scene made trailers, it probably became a large turn off to the audience...accidental homicide is usually not funny, it's uncomfortable, especially for women...

1. Girls trip is a better movie

2. Girls trip looked appealing and fun unlike the hidden murder plot of Rough Night

3. The black cast with big actors like Jada and Queen  makes this a mini  film event among black women.

Not bad but not good for Homecoming. Still with $20M this weekend and $22.4M in weekdays put HC at ~$250M. Thanks to summer weekdays, it'll finish $295M-$305M.

Rough Night instantly made it's characters look unsympathetic in the trailer by having them kill an innocent stripper and try to get away with it.

Black audiences really supported movies with black cast this year.

Get Out, Hidden Figures, and now Girls Trip.

I wonder how Detriot will do in a couple weeks.

Wait until Black Panther.

It wasn't just black audiences that supported these movies. As for Detroit, getting the feeling that's not gonna do much. No buzz, unproven distributor, and the movie seems destined to become the center of negative thinkpieces.

I'm honestly not sure Detroit will be a hit. It could go either way but I'm really not seeing any hype around that movie and I'm even seeing some push back. If the reviews are strong though maybe it could do well.

Never would have expected that one. If it can get some really good walkups this evening, maybe it can push for 23+. But 22 is awesome as well.

A few months ago, I think we all expected a 2.5-hour journey through Exposition Beach.

I would say the bigger difference is that the 1st 2 movies broke out to way more than just black audiences...

Girls Trip is a 3rd which has a very good chance of breaking wide...and if it successfully does (and signs are pointing to this being likely), just like for the 1st 2 movies, the legs would be attractive and the box office gates open...

Forget that! Dunkirk is going to have a bigger OW than Apes!

War for the Planet of the Apes OD $22m  OW $56m

Dunkirk OD 22m

just from personal anecdote the Apes trailer didn't interest me at all. it just doesn't look that interesting. and i saw and enjoyed both Rise and Dawn

It's one of the best movies of the year. See it.

What happened with Planet of the Apes? People really liked the first two and this one is getting the best reviews of the lot and people really liked that too.

Why is it failing like this?
