I'd guess it's from "sipping tea" probably.  For a while now sipping tea has been seen a rebuke/reaction to some ill fortune to someone who deserves it.

Yeah, that's not quite it, but it's closish:  Gossip tinged with drama seems the easiest way to put it.

Wow, that is a weird series to reboot. Not only did it only 10 years ago, but it wasn't even that popular: canceled after 4 seasons with fewer than 50 episodes.

 

It just shows that CBS really can't figure out how to produce a semi-successful series for the CW.
