Taking a look at the other theater nearby, the show in 13 minutes has only sold 16/130 :hahaha:

Unless of course it number fills a couple of seats for big openings this doesn't sound too hot.

m..m-maybe there's a local parade or something!

I think you can see a pattern to what Kathleen Kennedy has done so far.

She got the job and went after a few old friends and very well known directors for The Force Awakens, but ultimately settled on the re-boot crowd pleasing specialist that got Mission: Impossible and Star Trek off the ground again.

From there she went with "edgy" younger mostly unknown filmmakers.  Josh Trank, Gareth Edwards, Lord and Miller, Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow.

They end up having problems with nearly every one of the "kids" they brought in to make the films and Kennedy had to reach out to old wise pro reliable mentor types like Tony Gilroy and Ron Howard to come in and get the gigantic productions back on track.  She then had to ask Abrams to come back and finish out the re-boot trilogy.

Now she is reportedly going almost exclusively to older reliable studio types.  James Mangold, Stephen Daldry and Jon Faverau.  Not going to count the Game of Thrones guys yet because that actually has to be defined out what they are doing.

I could see the next step if either the Rian Johnson or Game of Thrones guys trilogy doesn't get off the ground is to start borrowing even more from Marvel and get the Russo brothers.

They need to find a mix of directors that are reliable but also somewhat fresh.  Right now they are stealing from everyone else instead of grooming their own.  The Russo brothers were virtually unheard of tv guys but they gave them a chance and they turned out to be possibly the best of the bunch.

We were literally just discussing this on Whatsapp. They chased the heat basically - Rian Johnson fresh off Looper, Edwards off Godzilla, Trank from Chronicle, Lord/Miller from Lego and 22JS and Treverrow fresh off Jurassic World. They got in whoever was the hot young director in terms of buzz.

I understand why it happens, but I'm so not a fan of taking a small scale director and throwing them right up at the high end of the scale.

Sometimes it can work, in the case of Edwards, he had directed Godzilla before Rogue One, so he could handle a big budget film.

Yeah, but that didn't work.  At least not like they wanted.

I've said it before but we really need to start taking trailer views/likes into consideration (yeah yeah I know WW and BP) but seriously Solo has been damn soft on YT. Last trailer has 13m views and 201k likes. Ant man 2 haas 19m views and 446k likes. Deadpool 2's final trailer has 28m views and 456k likes.

Social media buzz as a whole has been lackluster for Solo

IMO the likes are the bigger indicator than just plain views though

Anyone who's not satisfied by how Solo is not performing low enough, is welcomed to pay a visit to the China thread. Boy that's a mega drop from TLJ, and TLJ was already a major flop.

It is the only way now that Hollywood has more or less stopped making "midscale" movies.

The horror genre is almost the only place left where upcoming directors can break out at the box office.
