People are constantly using things like ER or 3D to downgrade Avatar's performance but the truth is that even focusing on admission only it was absolutely massive. The numbers it pulled in Europe for example are untouchable. Also the big elephant in the room is market expansion too which I am surprised by how many people don't weight enough. If Avatar did $200m in 2009 in China I can't quite imagine what it would have done today.

We will have to see where Endgame ends to make comparisons. If it ends with something like $3b +-0.1b then I think I would call it slightly more impressive than Avatar but not as Titanic probably.

Probably $800M to $1B, that`s a very conservative estimate because  Wolf Warriors 2 made $850M without feeling as big as Avatar, but then again, you can always make the argument that Hollywood don`t penetrate third tier cities, but that narrative is starting to fall apart with endgame, and Avatar was much much much bigger than endgame was in China. It tripled the highest grossing film record in China afterall. You're right, this is not stressed nearly enough, Market Expansion, Market Expansion, Market Expansion.

The people who try to downplay Avatar's achievement never take into account of 10 years of global inflation, the fact that there are far more theater capable of 3D and IMAX and all kinds of premium format than back in 2010, and that Avatar never got to take advantage of China`s expansion (because it kick started it), China is like 6 times bigger now. China is also not the only massively expanded market since 2010, most developing countries have much bigger box office market now that Avatar, despite doing record setting numbers, never taken advantage of. I have no problem with people bragging about their precious MCU and Star Wars, but being a box office fan, I wish people to at least acknowledge historically great box office runs, that`s what`s separating them as box office fans from just film fans.

Keep downplaying Avatar`s performance like how some people used "exchange rate" to justify how TFA would have had an equality impressive worldwide performance, had it been released in 2009... that was just hilarious.

Even if Endgame somehow surpasses Avatar worldwide, Avatar would have kept the worldwide box office record for 10 years, raising the previous record (Titanic) by almost 50%, and made 2.78B in 2009, when most developing markets are tiny and it singlehandedly brought about several film technology advancements, and popularized 3D.

Who has time for that??

It’s called a vacation.  My friend and I also got in a viewing of AIW and two Broadway shows. NYC is the city that never sleeps.

ETA: Oh; and we did get in a Captain Marvel show.

Avengers Endgame was SO much better than Infinity War.

9/10 from me.

Also, I stand by them being part 1 and part 2 movies. And now I mean that in the best possible way.

I feel the opposite. I think IW is a better film than EG (maybe with my second viewing I will have a better opinion of the film). However I get why everyone is so excited

Spoiler

I just felt more excited seeing a film with Rohirrim charge in battle of the Pelennor Fields in ROTK

Said this, I think Avatar is done. $3b in play (I can not believe I am saying this).

Sorry, that wasn't intended as an insult.  I was legitimately trying to imagine fitting 20 hours into a schedule over 2 days.

I have been doing SDCC for over ten years. I am use to operating on five hours of sleep over 2 days when Kevin Feige is concerned. 🤷‍♀️

While I'm considering @iHeartJames offer, I thought I would take a look at how Sunday is doing at my local theater.  5 sellouts and 76% capacity for tomorrow with 39 showtimes.  Interesting though is that the evening shows look very light for now.  GOT effect??

So the domestic weekend might land around $360m. Simply incredible, no other way to describe it.

To think - that would be 22M higher than Infinity Wars Opening Week

Avatar benefited from insanely favorable exchange rates.  For example, when it released CAD and USD were par.  Now one USD buys 1.35 CAD.

There are similar changes with most other major currencies.  Now, ten years of ticket price inflation cancels a lot of that out, but the point stands.  If (when, in my opinion) End Game surpasses Avatar, it will do so in every way that counts.  No caveats.
