Also, why is it just Lana and there's no Lily?

If you check out her twitter bio, it says "ex-filmmaker". Lilly's either retired or taking a break because of her transition. Lilly also wasn't involved with season 2 of Sense8 (only Lana wrote and directed the episodes).

Just surprised it took this long.

Let's put aside whether their post Matrix films have been good or bad (IMHO a mixture of both) They have not had solid box office hit since "V For Vengence" and with a couple of really expensive failures, the Warchowski's really need a box office hit if they want  creditbility in the industry. In fact, given their box office record over the past decade, a return to the Matrix world is just about the only big budget project they can get funded.

it seems like even Insurgent cuts close to the Matrix universe and makes me wonder if the film industry has a restriction on similar movies.  it seemed like there was a huge drought around Star Wars, maybe Star Wars had like a patent on laser sound effects for example, or adults just didn't want those kind of movies.

TBF Warner Bros has been willing to take a punt on every project they've directed due to The Matrix Trilogy making so much money.

V for Vendetta doesn't really count as they only produced it.

hope they don't pull a Halloween and do a "we're ignoring the other sequels and this will be the TRUE sequel" approach

The beauty of The Matrix is that they can acknowledge the previous films and start afresh.

They were very involved and on set on V, directed some second-unit at the very least.  So it's kinda their baby, too.
