The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

I'm going to do a quick post here because I'm currently watching Skyfall and don't want to wait an hour-plus before giving out my numbers, but I don't want to miss much of the movie.

Venom absolutely exploded tonight in my area. I will reiterate that today is a national holiday however, so that probably inflated the numbers slightly. But still... nothing to scoff at.

I'm only going to post 2 of my comps (the ones I deemed the most relevant) due to time constraints. But quick mental math has everything else pretty much in the same range... it's all very consistent which is almost surprising.

102% Joker - 13.5M

240% Suicide Squad - 9.84M

I know for a fact that TSS overindexed here based on how it performed at my theater. Plus that was a summer opener, when everyone was out of school and Thursday business was stronger in general. The Joker comp I only think is slightly too high because I think the holiday boosted Venom slightly. That being said, I'm still more or less on board with 12M, so I'll just flat out say 12M previews (give or take a couple decimal points).

This is nuts. Did not expect this type of business.

COMP NOTE: Both the AQP II comp and the F9 comp have been adjusted to reflect the return of Ontario theaters to the DOM market (what would be normally be the comp/0.955).

ADJUSTMENT NOTE: NTTD (AQP adj) is the amount of seats sold that does not include DBOX showings which were not tracked at that time while NTTD (F9 adj) is the amount of seats sold that does not include theaters which had unreliable data polluting their seat maps.

SELLOUT NOTE:  Locally, AQP II was still under a capacity cap, which greatly inflated the number of sellouts as well as depressing the amount of seats available.

Matinee: 48/1644 [2.88% sold] | 4.10% of all tickets sold

Regal:   244/7504 [3.25% sold] [+30 tickets]

All in all, a nice review boost. 👍

11.6M THU.

May be should have stick with myself. I was finally getting THU right 😬. Damn you @Menor & @keysersoze123 convincing me it 12.

Only thing I can think off is my comp was off as I was late with the numbers. But it was not that late and so some chains did underperform relative to MTC numbers. It happens but there is no doubt it was huge breakout compared to expectations yesterday morning.

Mostly MTC2 overindexed. As we were discussing.

Anyhow I was just joking. $300k, 500k, 600k etc are sort of immaterial. A bit happy though that my system is now working well.

Woah, the preview numbers ended up surprisingly close to my Cinemark’s projections. Only about $100k difference from the reported total.

I think we had better not use BW for comps anymore. BW comp for SC gave 9.8 million, for this it was giving around 13 million (probably 12.5ish adjusting for the missing hour). I think the coverage must have increased a lot since then.

That makes better sense. May be I added few more theaters especially at MTC2. I am going to only use SC as comp for final number.

Let us still not forget the key thing is its an uber breakout. Well above our expectations even as of yesterday morning.

Totally missed Venom, sorry its been crazy. Working on No Time to Die now Instead. As I said before Im only going to do Previews (Wed and Thurs) till Wed of next week because of getting swamped with "new seats" that Cineplex likes to do.

Will be putting in Thursday preview shortly. As you see, VERY few Wed showings right now, I expect that to change.
