I... I don't know how I feel about this. Haven't seen the Alan Arkin adaptation, but I just don't know how well the book can translate to screen. So much of its greatness is entirely due to the medium it's told through.

Bird Box was fine. The ending is meh.

I still think The Happening was very underestimated. I see nothing wrong with the origin for the attacks, and I see nothing wrong with the loony way the characters act in the movie. That's better than those other movies where characters either act super smart or incredibly dumb depending on what the plot needs.

The date for the 5th Annual Bamboo Awards will be either Dec 29th or Dec 30th.  It’ll depend on my New Years Plans, as me and some friends may be getting an Airbnb so can’t do the Bamboo Awards on my normal Dec 31st date.

Plus I still need to catch: Blindspotting, The Favourite, Bumblebee, If Beale Street Could Talk, Support the Girls, You Were Never Really Here and maybe a couple others if time allows.

I have several reviews to catch up on, but in a nutshell for now:

- Roma is awesome. Not my favorite film of the year, but a lock for my top five - if not top three. I wish I could have seen it theatrically, but even so, it looked amazing and had me captivated all the way through despite having to compete with the distractions of home viewing.

- Mary Poppins Returns is a whole lot of fun. It doesn't match up to the original (duh), but it's so good-natured and everyone involved is so committed to what they're doing that it's hard to resist.

- Mortal Engines is... there, I guess. It's a pretty effects reel and decent concept in search of a decent script. I was flabbergasted to see that Boyens/Walsh/Jackson were the credited screenwriters and not just a "Story by" credit; I know they've had some misses, but at least those misses were ambitious and not stock YA dystopian fare.

- Bumblebee is fun. Inconsequential, but fun. It's the first thing in the Transformers cinematic franchise since the first Bay film that I enjoyed genuinely rather than heavily ironically.

lol, I found this trippy webpage.  I was streaming Disturbing Behavior (1998) last night to catch up on all the horrors of 1998 and other films I haven't seen from that year.  The editing was so poorly done, and the runtime was 83 minutes, so I looked at the Wikipedia page and read that approx. 30 minutes was cut to deleted scenes.

Wikipedia theorized there are 'fan edits' lurking on the internet of Disturbing Behavior, so I gave up trying to watch the horrendous 83 minute version because it was so nonsensical and hoped to find the directors cut.  Somehow I ended up at a different "WIKI" page covering Disturbing Behavior called Mental Block Wiki.

It has these weird ass rules on the home webpage that say this WIKI site collects and features scenes that suggest mind control techniques.

Check out the first of some of these rules right here:

Rules...Must...Obey...

  1. Mind control, brainwashing, and hypnosis in FICTIONAL films, TV shows, comics, manga, and anime are allowed, in any combination of gender. Pornographic material is not allowed. Documentaries and hypnotist videos are not allowed.
  2. Mind control, hypnosis, brainwashing, corruption, emotional control (including love spells), body control, dream entrapment, and intelligence reduction are all allowed.

dream entrapment??  WTF?

Every year, I say I'm going to watch all the Christmas movies I'd ideally like to watch - It's a Wonderful Life, Elf, Die Hard, The Polar Express, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Nightmare Before Christmas, A Christmas Story, and maybe Home Alone - only to get to the 22nd having seen only one of them (Home Alone this year) and thinking "Welp, maybe next year."

I wanna like this post so much, and ran out of likes...

I have fit in Charlie's Brown's big special, the Holiday Baking Show, and Nailed It Holiday Edition (my kids LOVE this one), and that's it for holiday viewing.  I haven't even fit in any edition of the Grinch, and that's my favorite special of all time (and it's been at least 3 years since I've gone any Christmas Carol, which is my other favorite).  Maybe tonight's the night to see one!:)

Seen 1, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, and 12. All of them are pretty great to excellent. Been dying to see A Star is Born and Widows but I’ve been busy. I will definitely give the rest a chance.
