Mortal Engines is DOA for Universal, with this and Marwen, December isn't going to be kind for them but at least The Grinch is doing solid business.

I could honestly see Welcome to Marwen going sub-$20M tbh. Nobody cares.

I admire Robert Zemeckis for tackling interesting projects but only Flight have been successful out of all his recent live action films. The Witches sounds more promising and hopefully will get him out of this slump,

Next weekend I have Spider-Man at $37M (legs will be great throughout the holidays), The Mule at $12M, and Mortal Engines at $8M. The Mule should be opening higher in theory considering it’s likely to be Clint’s final starring role but the movie reportedly isn’t screening for a lot of critics which can only mean one thing.

I don't think this is too boring of a weekend. Ben is Back, Mary Queen of Scots, and Vox Lux are all debuting in platform and looking to capitalize on the dry spell. Plus, The Favourite has a tangible chance to leap into the top ten ahead of its wider expansion next weekend.

I wonder if Universal and DreamWorks saw it as a potential awards play which hasn't worked out for them with this and First Man being snubbed.

First half of Mowgli was actually pretty good, to the point I would say where it could have held a candle to the Disney version.

But the second half kinda fell apart for me. It wasn't a terrible movie overall by any means but it ended way too quick and so many emotional arcs felt incomplete.

Friday 11:27PM 2nd update/writethru: The weekend box office is so slow that Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet and Universal/Ilumination’s The Grinch are now in a staring contest for first place with a little over $15M a piece. Ralph 2 has a bit of the edge over Grinch with a Friday take of $3.5M to $3.3M. The toon throw-down may even extend into Sunday since both Ralph 2 and Grinch could tie Saturday with $7.1M a piece.

Ilumination trolling Disney again...Nice...😎

That and the Grinch’s $67M OW vs Ralph 2’s $56M OW.

One word of advice, Disney (No, no. Not Pixar....”Disney”): Try to market your animated movies a bit more like Illumination does and put them in release slots where they can open much higher. Cause it seems that BH6, Moana & Ralph 2 has the exact same OW-number ($56M), no higher. Can’t just rely on high quality without awareness.

Aside from the opening, Ralph 2 has been very meh to follow. Much more frontloaded than I imagined. $200 million looks safe still, but it might fall behind the first film adjusted ($215 million) at this rate. At least it looks like it will finish within the range of WDAS Thanksgiving openers WW with around $650 million. It's also on track to beat the Grinch WW, which is looking like a sub-$600 million finish due to a weak OS gross (could finish sub-$300 million).
