Weekend Thread | An Asgardian pops in on p.9 ~ HTTYD3 17m, A:BA 3.1m, IIR 2.2m

Recommended Posts

17 probably includes the 2.5m in previews though.

Still, hoping it nets itself a good gross.

I don't think 2 & 3 were as strong as 1, but the whole franchise has been about being genuine and trying to make the best movie for the sake of the story arc unlike all the other shite out there; Minions, Ice Age, even crap like Monsters U and Dory etc.

So, I hope it gets the money the franchise as a whole deserves.

Also, what is IIR? edit: Isn't it Romantic. Wasn't expecting that to be 3rd.

They say Lego is pretty good, but as far as I'm concerned, the franchise should never have gone and done Batman and Ninjago, so I don't care that this one probably ends the entire thing.

HTTYD3 was fantastic. Better than the second. Shoe-in for Best Animated Feature nom next year.

Was also extremely busy even for the 9:10 3D show I was in. Talked to my former boss and the number he gave me they had for the evening is their equivalent of something like a 22-23M Friday, pretty much on par with Grinch last year.

‘How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’ Heading Toward $60M Franchise Record Opening

While DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 3 repped the lowest opening in its trilogy at $41.2M (down from its original’s $60.2M), the studio’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World via Universal is heading toward the best debut out of three with $60M at 4,259 theaters coming off its 2014 part 2 ($49.4M) and 2010 original ($43.7M).

‘How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’ Heading Toward $60M Franchise Record Opening

That would make it the biggest OW for an animated film from DWA, in a long time since Madagascar 3, seven years ago. And a coincidence too that i’m comparing HTTYD3 to another well-received DWA-threequel.

$60 million for Dragon? Wow! Definitely was necessary, it’s word of mouth is amazing and it’s international turnout is overall great! It seems that other than LEGO 2, Alita, and Serenity this year, being delayed a few years or less is good.

Escape.Foom was due for a holiday release... but moved to January. Pulled an amazing $55 million stateside and over $110 million WW.

The Upside was due for March 2018, but some film financier is a 8e4e2b36fb40c77af6e250712fe362f5_400x400

but now it will be grossing  $100 million stateside this weekend!

Just now, boxofficeth said:

May I assume HTTYD3 just killed Alita's chance to cross 100M since Alita seems to get family audience as well?

It doesn't look family driven so far.

64% of the audience is males over 18  with 36% males between 18-25

Quote

Men under 25 at 36% are driving business in weekend 2 followed by males over 25 at 28% per PostTrak.

4 minutes ago, Ryan Reynolds said:

The Upside making 100m is nice, but its budget is not that low for a drama, star salaries ? Kevin Hart is the only one with a built in audience but this was off brand for him.

It was a huge hit in France so the rights probably cost  a significant sum,  Kevin Hart doesn't do anything for cheap (even tweeting for his own films) and this was done a few years ago when Cranston was a hotter commodity.
