I don't really buy that there just wasn't interested for a SLOP sequel. The audience ate up the first film. To me the big outlier with SLOP2 and all of their other films is the marketing, which always seemed off. Granted, I also noticed The Grinch's marketing felt a bit less effective than their norm, but that was likely curtailed by a great release spot. If TLK and TS4 do over a billion DOM together, that in and of itself is basically the summer movie family cap. And that's before adding in what Aladdin is doing too. So I think it's 100% a combo of release and marketing, not a lack of interest for a sequel.

Ted got a 4x, people ate it up. The sequel suffered. TMNT got a 2.9x, which doesn't seem great, but is pretty solid for a movie that already had a built-in audience, and I feel like people liked it quite a bit. The sequel suffered. Fantastic Beasts got a 3.1x, which was way better than most of the Potter movies, and people liked it. The sequel suffered.

Sure there were plenty of other factors that hurt these movies, but this isn't the first time a big hit film dropped a lot from its predecessor.

Hello...

Deadline's report today on DP and SLOP2 preview number:

School is increasingly out for the summer with ComScore reporting 62% K-12 on break today , moving to 70% on Monday and hopefully that will have some kind of positive impact at the box office.

62% starting today. Meaning today is the last day of school for many. As of yesterday, the preview night, only about 50% were out.

On the other hand, the first film came out in the middle of the holidays, while only about 50% of schools are out right now, so it is not a huge surprise this film didn’t earn as much during previews, as many of its target audience had school the next day.”

Wait until Disney realizes they can make money on horror films

They have. Many stories that they are going to use the Fox Searchlight label to  get into horror and other types of film  aimed at adults that are not  "kid freintly" without damaging the Disney Studios brand.

If Disney ever use Fox Searchlight label it will be the very end of the concept itself and of the FSL studio no ?

With comedies in particular, you have a lot of one shot ideas..an idea that is good for one film, but does not repeat well.

Horrible Bosses is another. They had Jennifer Aniston back for no reason.

A nice paycheck.

Well, that was *her* reason, not the movie’s. 😉

And if they gave her a that nice a paycheck for an insignificant role, wasted money. 😆

Did they really put Fox Searchlight logo at the start of Dark Phoenix ? Wikipedia, mojo, imdb do not mention it, that would quite be quite ridiculous, do you have source or you went to see it ?

It is not of course that Disney will close Fox Searchlight and turn it into something they control a la Touchstone, the very concept of that type of division is being independent of the main division, different staff, etc... that can take decision and greenlight/acquire project (up to a certain budget and a certain numbers during a year) without having to ask permission and being told what to do. The second Disney get involved in a decision outside the above, they effectively stopped FSL and it does not make any sense anymore.

Pulse points to around 10 million for Phoenix still, 9-11 to be safe. For Pets 2 around 15, so 14-16 as the range.

10M true Friday probably means 11-12M Saturday followed by 7-8M Sunday. So 33-35M for the weekend.

DARKP will need that 11 true Friday / 16 full Friday at least, to have any shot at 40 ow.

SLOP2 keeps 50 hopes alive and won't miss 45 in any case.

Maybe around 55-60 for SLOP2?

My understanding was Searchlight would operate at the studio much like Pixar and LucasFilm and Marvel all do now.

But considering that everyone just calls it all Disney anyway....

When Disney announces a live-action remake of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow cartoon, I'm blaming you for this.

They include it with Mr. Toad like the original and I'm in

Even using 16 true Friday tough to see 55.

2.3

16

20 (+25%) // SLOP1 did +11% in July

15.6 (-22%) // SLOP1 did -22%

= 53.9

EDIT : @Ms Lady Hawk pointed the July vs early June release date. So changing Sat (and Sun too a little.)
