Yikes. A sub $500 PTA and still in 1000 plus theaters (Crawl will be about 1k PTA on 2000+) and some wonder why TLK got an expansion.

Stuber is one of these films where I watched the trailer and thought "why is this a movie?"

Grace Randolph is great and I don't know why you have her on that list. She is great

This hurts me so much 😛

I honestly don't mind people like her and John campea talking about boxoffice. It's fun that they atract more people to that side of movies but it does bother me that they (specialy grace) say so much stupid stuff, sometimes they do a good job but most times it a bit very meh.

These are the things Grace said in her movie math in the past weeks that where pretty stupid:

Spiderman FFH's $580m, being worrying because it opened in all it's market so it would drop fast + her saying the 93m Weekend was bad whilst overlooking the 92m it made on Tues, Wed and Thurs. After that OD she was doubting the 1B, wasn't very thought full of her.

Then we have her saying TS4 will miss 1B, that pixar should be worried because TS4 didn't do great. She said this after a $80m week brought TS4 to $860m so again not very insightfull by her.

And then you have her doubting TLK to go over 1B a few days before release also seemed very strange if you would have looked any presales in a lot of countries over the world. A specialy domistic.

I think these where the biggest face palms in the last month. And obviously everybody can make mistakes but with the amount of information she had at that point in time or could have had it woudn't be to hard to do a much better job.

That's why I love Dan Murrell from Fandom Entertainment. He has plenty of experience with box office as is, knows what to say, how to say it, backs his work up with plenty of research, and has little bias in his reporting. He's a talent.

Loved H&S.  One of the most fun times I've had in theaters this year.  Everything worked and the crowd I was with was really into it, as well.

Based on that description alone I'm going to read his stuff right now.

Great if you think her having a racist meltdown about Disney "race bending" dogs by hiring Tess Thompson to voice Lady in Lady and the Tramp is great movie analysis I suppose. She has also gone on weird rants about how "SJWs" and "socialists" are ruining America.

She is crazy, to put it mildly. She's the Fox News of movie criticism lol.

:wintf:

That's off the deep end even for her.

For a woman who's pretty brash and opinionated and has made it big in geekdom in a predominately boys club she's also  strangely retrograde and sexist in her opinions about actresses and female characters.   For example - her recent hot take about the Mulan trailer was complaining that they're making Mulan  too special when she's just one of the guys.  HUH????

My Hobbs and Shaw Weekend calculation:

Thu: $5.8M

TruFri: $17.9M

Fri: (4.09x trufri) $23.7M

Sat: (+22.5% trufri) $21.95M

Sun: (-17.5%) $18.1M

Domestic Weekend: $63.75M

How did I do? I figured that H&S Saturday wouldnt rise as high as Fallout but a good amount. I also thought its Sunday would hold stronger than 20% due to the Canadian holiday.

P.S. can someone explain the international situation of Hobbs and Shaw cause right now I'm pretty confused? Sources say a 60M Friday for 90M overseas total. On BOT Charlie says its a typo and in reality its 40M Friday. Which would still be an overperformance and make at the very least 140M overseas if that was the case. So can someone tell me if its overpreforming overseas or not?

Of course you would love her. She's extremely bias in her "analysis", ignoring facts that contradict her narative, misleading her viewers/followers, and borderline a conspiracy theorist. Don't forget her hate towards women in movies, especially, for some reason, Jessica Chastain. :hahaha:

Probably more an indictment of everything else out there, IMO.  As @TalismanRing suggested, TLK at one screen or two screens is still probably doing good enough to entice some stragglers to jump on the bandwagon for a week.

I mean, it's not like there is much out there in the Top 20 banging down the door, begging to be added.

Also, look at the drops:

What's particularly egregious in there?  FFH and TS4 has very soft drops.  Stuber and Yesterday got slaughtered, but let's be real here. Stuber isn't doing anything to write home about and Yesterday is in its sixth week.

Only one that might be kinda sorta iffy is Crawl, and eh.  Not a hill I'm going to die on, especially given its placement right now in the Top 12.

Even Aladdin and Annabelle had fairly soft drops.

Just seems to me theaters out there took a look at this pretty pathetic June and July (outside of TS4 and TLK) and made a rational choice to jump on the best bandwagon they could this weekend.  Doesn't mean they'll be on it for long.

But, well, theater managers gotta eat too, ya know?

I'm not saying that theaters are literally being forced against their will (there's not much out as you say), I'm just saying expanding to the most theaters of all time when it's making such low money reeks of Disney realizing the holds aren't great and trying to boost it anyway they can because they can with such a barren schedule.

It's very lucky every studio freaked out when they saw it on the schedule and basically decided to release nothing notable that could be remotely considered direct competition for all of August and September. Bet some of them are kicking themselves too now seeing the legs, this month would have been a perfect opportunity for something like a Shazam or even one of the non-Disney May movies to release.

At that end of the spectrum of theaters, we're not really talking about that much moola though.

You could be right, of course.  I'm just saying that I think you're overselling it more than a bit.

To put it a different way:

Is it funny that a film that's gonna get 35m to 40m this weekend expanded?  Of course.

Should we really be reading that much into it?  IMO, not especially.

At most it's Disney not being particularly picky about the requirements for theaters to host a movie and/or being much more lax in its revenue share agreements allowing some more theaters to temporarily jump into the pool.  That's a little noteworthy, sure.  I just don't think it's a sign of panic or "freaking out" or anything like that.
