Just didn't enjoy it that much. It was fine, it wasn't a bad movie. But the songs weren't memorable, the story was pretty bland, none of the characters were any more compelling than they already were by the end of the first movie etc.

This felt like one of the 1990s direct to VHS sequels just with a much higher budget and better visuals. Definitely competent, but nothing memorable.

Hot take alert I liked frozen 2 better than 1

TROS released 5 days after TLJ did. So adjust accordingly. The timing of where/when the money is going to be made will be different even within December. TROS released closer to the 'sponge time' of the holiday when people are off work/school. It will enter sooner and exit sooner than TLJ and TFA the holiday soaking period.* The number on Christmas Eve is gonna take a hit but that's typical though it falls on a 'discount' Tuesday that's not discounted by theaters since they suspended it.

AMC: "Discount Tuesdays are excluded December 24th and December 31st. The savings will return January 7th, 2020!"

* Christmas Day

TFA: Day 8

TLJ: Day 11

TROS: Day 6

So Monday PS looks great and if they hold up, we are looking at $29mn Monday which is great. That would be 72.5% of TFA and co-incidentally weekend is also around that ratio.

So, may be lets hold the meltdowns till 1st January or at least 26th December. That said

giphy.gif

28m+ would be 6th biggest Monday.

Exactly 3x multiplier would get it right above Rogue One. That's the # I'm seeing now but it'd be nice to see some huge Christmas #s.

I'm still curious how much profit The Rise of Skywalker will make ~

The Last Jedi cost around $200-$317 million in budget - which obviously TROS would have cost more, but once you add in marketing costs, as well as the re-shoots which JJ confirmed (rather late filming too I should add due to on of his interviews during September-October) it does make one wonder whether or not Disney will publish accurate costs?

Some people forget just how dominant and enormous Potter was.

DH2, in today's market, would have had a $215m OW, and over $400m OS for $615m+ WW OW. China would have been enormous for DH2. $1.6b-$1.7b WW finish.

Presuming Frozen II lands north of $450M, I was curious about how frequently both a franchise starter and its sequel become that large.

Franchises where the first two films adjust to over $440 million domestic, via The Numbers' franchise index:

Avengers (proper)

Finding Nemo

Frozen

Hunger Games

Indiana Jones

Jurassic Park

Lord of the Rings

Pirates of the Caribbean

Spiderman

Star Wars

Very close calls ($400M to $440M) are Harry Potter, Shrek, Toy Story, and Transformers

That’s because it was never dominant. Would have, should have, could have, even with your baseless assumptions (really doubt China would go crazy over this boring and with minimum action franchise Nevermind that the euro is far weaker compared to the dollar these days making the european grosses suspect) , 1.6 billion wouldn’t exactly make it dominant in today’s box office world.

2 Popes was the best movie released this weekend.  See it instead of TROS!

Get. Real. The acting was fantastic and some dialogue was very funny, it wasn’t a bad movie, but it’s like watching paint dry compared to Rise of Skywalker and doesn’t hold a candle to Star Wars. To say otherwise just makes you look like a clown. It was the worst movie nominated for a Golden Globe in either major category.

Rise of Skywalker kicks ass! An amazing end to the saga and infinitely rewatchable.

Potter's consistency though is what made it enormous though. Pretty much most of those films would adjust to over $1 Billion today. Even as a casual fan I greatly admire those series of books/films. Would love to see a Harry Potter 9 one day. Would have a legit chance at $2 Billion.

Harry Potter was the MCU of the 2000's

The lowest film would be at $1.1b today (DH1 and PoA)...in 2D.

We've seen too many franchises go down the drain this decade including Potter to some extent with the FB films.

Nah, the saving grace is that none of the Potter characters aside from Dumbledore are in the FB films. That keeps Potter's legacy as a series wholly intact. It remains to be seen what happens with the FB series. The first was positively received but the second was hugely criticized. The third film being delayed a year shows that they're taking their time and fine-tuning the series...so we'll see how that goes.
