We got a few hours to kill. Might as well bring up this 👌 thread

Would love to see how the crowd who blames all the negative DWD headlines on "misogyny" explains away Pugh's continued refusal to deny the feud rumors, and that she's managed to quiet quit the PR tour without (seemingly) running afoul of WB. You know, the same studio that's releasing Dune 2, so she probably wants to stay in their good graces.

If WB were really upset with Florence for how she's handled DWD promotion, IMO you'd be getting way more stories from "industry sources" about how Pugh is shirking her duties as the star of the movie and being a bit of a diva. If they insisted on her being available to promote DWD, they'd have made a few calls to Budapest and schedules would've been rearranged.

Yet, Pugh has done the bare minimum here and WB seems to have given their tacit approval. They must feel the alternative (Pugh showing up everywhere and being very candid about her experience on the film or the "Miss Flo" video) is far worse...

With 2.5M presales, i think 12-13M OW is very possible

That would be good, but imo it could of been so much more if Disney put some effort into this re-release.

$800mil domestic should of been a lock if they had put it into more theatres, used the special edition instead of standard (why?), had a new AVATAR 2 trailer with it (again why doesnt it?), etc.

Still for a re-release, it looks like its going to do quite well.

Its a genuinely terrible film, but a billion is a billion at the end of the day. Its a mega hit.

It's a bad movie but it has some good moments (Pratt and the awesome black actress who stole the show on the frozen lake, Howard underwater). It's better than the average Marvel movie.

  • Estimates for the film's rerelease range from $7 million to $12 million, with box-office analysts saying a figure in the mid-teens would be "huge."

Think itll get over 12 million, but dont know how much more than that
13 million already counts as mid-teens right?

Anyone who thinks Avatar has no cultural footprint has never encountered a four hour wait for the Avatar ride at Animal Kingdom on a random Tuesday years after opening.

It's a real distinction though, since I'd argue Avatar's success was predicated on an early engagement with the modern emphasis and importance on experience and increased agency. As such rendering, like with Harry Potter, the content optimised in its theme park format rather than its story format. Cameron is a master of experience more than he's necessarily a master of storytelling and character.

That experience and agency has now been optimised much more in theme parks via Avatar's own world and HP's world and, to a lesser extent Star Wars land (with the muted original reception to SWL indicative of just how different immersion and agency-driven properties like Avatar and HP are from story and character driven properties like SW).

As a result it's going to be interesting to see how Avatar 2 holds up. Cameron hit the exact zeitgeist of the shift into experience and sensory narcissism when Avatar came out. Now we've been in that world for 20 years or so, and film isn't the best medium for it will things be different? On the other hand since Avatar not many films have taken advantage of the cultural shift (partially because of a lack of skill but also because as discussed film isn't really the best format for it)

After all the Avatar ride had a four hour wait years after opening, but if we go right to the start of the agency-driven experience era in theme parks: so did Soarin' from 2002ish to at least 2015 and that had no cultural footprint at all since it was a theme park only property.

Can a film still do that now everyone knows they can get that type of kick better at a theme park or concert? Probably if anyone can, Cameron can.

If that had a horror director and was 90 minutes it would’ve been so much punchier. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either.

The original blacklist script would have come out to about 90 minutes, and was clearly aimed at a Blumhouse-type of budget. But then Wilde and her Booksmart writer re-wrote it into something a lot longer and more expensive.

It’s quite horrible.

It was written by the writer and director of these gems:

And randomly enough he’s also Dick Van Dyke’s grandson
