The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread

Challengers is doing fine in almost all of my theaters. A bit weaker between the coasts but by far not as uneven as e.g. Monkey Man.

So, now it gets complicated: Unsung Hero, counted some hours ago, had 496 sold tickets for today (in 6 theaters, no shows in the AMC Fresh Meadows). With another big theater in NY added as compensation, the AMC Lincoln Square 13 (not exactly a theater for the target audience but I could be wrong) Unsung Hero had 757 sold tickets.

Comps: Sound of Freedom (14.2M OD but it was also Independence Day so it had a full day and way more shows) had on Tuesday for Tuesday 1.189 sold tickets.

Christmas with the Chosen (2021, could not find any number) had in the same 6 theater counted on December 3 for December 3 273 sold tickets.

American Underdog (1M from these shows) had also on Wednesday for Wednesday 139 sold tickets in 4 theaters (would be 413 sold tickets for Unsung Hero in the same 4 theater) = 3M OD for Unsung Hero (but I don't know if American Underdog had so few shows).

And Father Stu (1.7M OD) had, counted on Good Friday for Good Friday (so probably with way more shows and walk-ups), 67 sold tickets.

So after all the annoying search, I still can't provide you with a concrete number but you see that in comparison it looks really good for that film.

Yesterday I knew something must be wrong. A movie which at least partly reminds (me) of I Can Only Imagine (maybe a little less drama) could not have such bad presales 😉

And what surprised me most: It's doing fine almost everywhere (despite having only 1-2 shows/theater): NY: 261 sold tickets, Miami 75, Michigan 96, Texas 79, Arizona 4 (probably very recently added because in other theaters around it looks way better), San Francisco 117, LA 125.

All this film needs now is good WOM ;).

I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen such front loading than with Unsung Hero’s EA shows today compared to its preview shows tomorrow. I guess all the fans of the band decided to come out tonight? Was it marketed to that target audience to get tickets for Wednesday? The front loading just seems so extreme. If they end up rolling EA and Thursday previews into Friday numbers, that Saturday drop could be epic!

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was the same way, albeit the EA was on Saturday and in far fewer showings.  At least sales for that one picked up in the final few days though.

0.56x The Creator (THU): $755k (17 theaters)

0.65x Asteroid City: $715k (12 theaters)

Average: $970k

This movie must be underperforming here, most comps still pointing to sub-$1 million (but trending upwards). I think I'll partially blame it on arguably the heaviest pre-sale theater in town only going on sale yesterday, so that hasn't caught up to the level of other films

1.42x Anyone But You: $1.7 Million (17 theaters)

0.82x Asteroid City: $900k (12 theaters)

Average: $1.14 Million

Good growth in the last few days, but still a ways from other markets it seems. Maybe it's the comps but I have always seen this play better with the cinephiles than with the general audience. Maybe I'm wrong though and this will be more like Anyone But You? I hope, but I'm going to go with my numbers here, thinking about the good pace, and go with $1.25 Million, +/- 0.2. With around $600k in previews I could see them round up and report 2 million total previews

Pace looks really good here. This is like T-1.5 relative to when I pull in the US, so average is likely overshooting today. But Civil War was pulled at same time and it's the one I'm paying most attention to.

Had to count about 20 shows by hand. Pacing a little better than Civil War, which had one of the best paces I've tracked. MTC1 is ~57% of sales. For Civil War it was ~65% on T-2 or so. So don't think it's gonna be a big MTC1 skew like Monkey Man.  Thinking ~$2m Thu-only as well.

Def strange, Indiana and Minnesota usually show similar. I think your biggest theater starting presales late could be skewing things a lot. But maybe not. We'll see!

I have noticed that about our samples as well! Definitely putting an asterisk on this track for future comps.

Just for fun, some comps if I take out that theater from both sets:

0.44x Civil War: $1.28 Million

1x Monkey Man: $1.4 Million (with the theater: 0.82x = $1.14 Million)

0.41x Mean Girls: $1.07 Million

So some improvements, but actually not as much as I expected. Strange! Might just be an outlier; I would def trust your numbers this time over mine :)

TWO THEATER MN PRESALES TRACK (T-1/0)

04/25/24

Challengers - 52 tickets sold

Unsung Hero - 44 tickets sold

Boy Kills World - 9 tickets sold

COMPS (all Thurs only)

Challengers

0.32x of Madame Web ($1.94M)

0.34x of Mean Girls ($1.12M)

0.41x of Civil War ($1.20M)

2.36x of Drive-Away Dolls ($1.06M)

2.48x of Abigail ($2.48M)

AVERAGE: $1.56M

Unsung Hero

0.56x of Ordinary Angels ($161K)

1.22x of Cabrini ($611K)

AVERAGE: $386K

Boy Kills World

0.19x of Monkey Man ($268K)

0.36x of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare ($306K)

AVERAGE: $287K

Challengers on the whole looks to be skewing a little low here, hence why I added the higher Madame Web and Abigail comps to shore up the average. Probably a Thurs preview finish in the $1.75-2M range given mine and other trackers' data, which yields nicely for a $15-20M debut. Unsung Hero looks kinda bad, but that's partially because Ordinary Angels waaaaay over indexed here to a bizarre extent. The average looks ok crosschecking with other trackers tho, so I suppose I'll project out $400K pure THU and a $6-8M OW. And as for Boy Kills World, we now have a new worst selling movie in my market after The Book of Clarence held the crown from the beginning of my tracking dataset. Overall very rough goings, but the two original non EA action comps I have say basically the same thing, sooooo $300K previews and a $3M OW?

Really good day and it was expected considering TMobile deal. Let us see how wednesday goes. I am sticking to my prediction though it could over index big time here just like some of the other recent releases.

Challengers MTC1

Previews(T-1) - 24266/295401 463648.44 1703 shows +5021

Friday - 27792/489438 508416.56 2681 shows +6466

Obviously yesterday was heavily boosted due to TMobile deal. Should hit 2m thursday I feel or come very close. Add another 600-700K for early shows. Definitely feel good about 20m OW as well looking at thursday pace and great reviews seen so far.

Ooh so Challengers has a range in here of $750k Thursday to $2m. Should be an interesting weekend.

but if i didn't get wrong people saying 750K is without previews of the previews. While people saying 2M it's with that included.

So it's more like 1.5M or 2M when you put everything together.

Challengers for my area has 11 showtimes for tonight and has sold 138 tickets. This is slightly ahead of Civil Wars 133 tickets (which I pulled later in the morning). It's below the 192 sales of Mean Girls.

0.718x Mean Girls for $2.3M

0.964x Civil War for $2.8M
