saw this. unsatisfying. gets by for a while on being all hardass and amoral but ultimately can't hide that, in Emily Blunt's absence, it never came up with a strong idea or purpose to push it forward. spends the entire second half sorta just sputtering out. also manages to somehow underuse Del Toro, which is perversely impressive.

That’s disappointing as Sicario is one of my favorite movies this century. The trailers for this one made it seem like a damsel in distress storyline involving a little girl that Del Toro needs to protect. I hope not! Ugh, I respect your opinions on things Jack so I’l probably come away with the same view but I’ll see it anyway.

the ending practically dares you not to laugh at it, yeah

Sounds like from what I've heard online. Even those who like it say the ending is bad.

Spoiler

I've read the script and I don't read that as sequel bait... Maybe I'm reading it wrong or maybe they changed it but him saying "lets talk about your future" and the way it's described in the screenplay sounds like Alejandro is gonna to kill the kid... not train him or whatever people think it means

"Anything but victim negotiating how to survive with his killer ... "

This is how the script describes it after Alejandro's last line.

Spoiler

I just read that draft too and basically the issue is that in the context of the final film - where almost all of that scripted final act and ending was ripped out - it plays like an out of place post credit scene

The spoiler-free version, I just read a script and basically a lot of the last act was ripped out in the film, with only that ending scene remaining. Which now plays a lot differently despite being basically the same.
