The power of Queen has certainly grown to godlike proportions over the decades since Mercury’s death honestly. They were certainly popular in the day but clearly not on the same level as your ABBAs and Phil Collins. But the fact that LGBT acceptance sped up so dramatically is probably another big boost to their legacy.

As for MJ, yes, a biopic can be made, pedo or not. All the worshipped rockstars were sexing minors going back to Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Mick Jagger (and Bill Wyman), Jimmy Page, Bowie, Iggy Pop, Steven Tyler up to Jared Leto.

 

The controversy these days surrounding that would definitely be a problem I think? Like the reason BR is doing so well is cause regardless of the BTS director drama, Queen are a fairly unproblematic band for that era? Like Freddie Mercury is so beloved and sympathetic as a figure. That’s probably why Elton is getting a biopic too. Bowie sleeping with 14 year old girls either being in the film or not will be a thing. John Lennon is also someone they’ll have a hard time appeasing everyone on cause of his domestic abuse.

The real question is...will this movie's phenomenal box office receipts encourage Singer to drop that DOA 'Red Sonja' project and demand to work with major studios again?  And will they be interested?

bad example. PC was never bigger than Queen. In fact he has a couple knows hits and thats it

In the 80s Phil Collins had many number 1 hits vs Queen who had Another One Bites the Dust and then some pretty significant dry spells.

It’s hard to say cause this movie has one big get out of jail card which is that Singer was fired and was known to be fighting with the actors on set (especially Rami) which gives everyone else involved a bit more sympathy than if he had directed the whole film.

Queens Songs We Will Rock You and We are the Champions and Bohemian Rhapsody are very well known even for people not alive when Queen was popular.
