A decent amount of the remainder is drive ins, which not all of them open until May. That’s why the highest theater counts are usually in the thick of summer. As far as why films don’t break DM3’s theater count record? Small 1-2 screen theaters in small towns don’t care about the big action tentpole films. Films for younger play much better in those areas while the megaopeners we come to know would be in a multiplex in a different town

To be completely honest, I'm surprised drive ins are still a thing at all. I know they've been completely dead in my state for years.

I’m surprised too. I don’t live near them, but the prices are hard to beat for a double feature

We've got a local drive-in in Sacramento and it's decently popular in a retro way.  Our super-hot summers probably help, as folks start going out and about after 7-8pm when the delta breeze hits.  Going to see a movie in the outdoors at 9 or 10 pm when it's 75 or so can be a pretty pleasant experience.

I love the drive-in.  I don't go as much but there you  can just lean back the car seat, or bring beach chair and a blanket and enjoy the weather, plus yes get two movies for pretty cheap

I'm a  bit conflicted on IW beating the opening weekend record. $250 million seems nearly impossible for any non-Star Wars movie to break but there is an argument that TFA could've had an even bigger OW if it was opening on another weekend. Pre-Christmas weekend is always a bit depressed because of holiday shopping.

OW though is just a ton fans coming out and the MCU has enough for the OW to go down if their is enough hype. There is. If it happens it wouldn’t be the first time MCU, or even a cbm, has outdone a Star Wars movie on OW (and totals).

Box office question:

Does previews box office only count if the showing starts before midnight or are these 2am and 3am on Friday shows also considered previews? Or are those considered "true Friday"?

From memory I think it's a 6 am turnover time

For Force Awakens previews went all the way until 6 or 7am.  Basically previews are all showtimes that start while the thursday night crew is still working up until the theater closes for the night.  When the theater re-opens Friday morning is when "True Friday" starts.

Theater Update

Avengers 3003 3928 76.45%
Deadpool 2 232 2042 11.36%

Avengers is already the third-biggest seller here, only 1,000 behind TLJ and 1,900 behind BP. Considering that my theater will likely add in a few more showtimes this week, this will probably fit squarely inbetween Jedi and Panther.

So Blank Panther was a much better seller at your theater than TLJ?

Also is that good or bad for DP2 for your theater?
