The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

40.055k 2018-10-18 THU Halloween ($7.7m)

28.191k   2018-09-06 THU The Nun ($5.4m)

44.337k  2019-03-21 THU   Us

Both comparisons would lead US previews numbers close to $8.5m, but it depends on how many theaters they were played on thursday. I believe US had a lower number of theaters. $8m looks a good target.

Extra

119.526k total sales for Captain Marvel on previews (including all formats) ($20.7m)

That would mean $7.68m for US.

Very curious if these comparisons mean something.

Here's a funny little observation. At Marcus Theaters, Hellboy, of all movies, has "supertickets" on sale. For $20, you get to see a Thursday night screening of the movie, as well as a Funko Pop and a poster. And for whatever reason, two people already bought tickets for it.

That is a steal.  And Never, Ever question Funko Pop collectors.  They are a rabid and scary bunch.

Can confirm, that's a bargain for new Pops. My brother was a pop collector (had over 200), but when he went through some money troubles last year he sold about 150 of them, ended up making over $1000 off the sale (he kept the ones he liked and the more valuable ones).

He would literally snap them up when he could.

Movie/Date Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Sunday

Dumbo 577 654 770 564 463 443 1,345
  11 days 10 days 9 days 8 days 7 days 6 days 5 days

Shazam! 362 285 290 226 176 198 498
  18 days 17 days 16 days 15 days 14 days 13 days 12 days

Dumbo

Past 7 Days

108% of Lego 2 (37M)

76% of Dragon 3 (41.8M)

Day 18-Day 5

124% of Lego 2 (42.5M)

85% of Dragon 3 (46.7M)

Shazam

Past 7 Days

108% of Lego 2 (37M)

70% of Dragon 3 (38.3M)

Day 23-Day 12

220% of Lego 2 (75M)

98% of Dragon 3 (53.8M)

-Dumbo started out relatively strong at first, but it hasn't really been as strong nor as held as well as Lego and Dragon had recently, which is kinda reflected with these numbers. I guess Lego and Dragon being sequels inflate their presales, but Dumbo is still an established property, so...maybe I'll just wait for Monday's #s, so I can get more material to work off of.

-Shazam's sales have been pretty mediocre, but it's arguably excused by the fact by the Fandango showings being of greater priority. So hey, with those out of the way, maybe Shazam will crawl its way back up to bigger numbers?

I owe you a like (I'm out from Dora yesterday:)...

But as for tracking vs presales, Dumbo has had $60M+ tracking for weeks and Shazam has had $45M+ tracking for the same period...most of us said those 2 numbers should have been swapped weeks ago...if you swap the tracking. both of the presales look on point so far:)...

Lego 2 / Dragon 3 also have official reviews out for a time at this point, which probably help presales being stable.

I think today and tomorrow with reviews dropping will tell more about Dumbo potential

I don’t think Dumbo even hits 50M this weekend.  Don’t feel any hype for it whatsoever.

Sadly I agree. I’m thinking $41-44m. I hope it is well received and has strong enough legs to get to $150m though.
