The OW international numbers are terrible. Big letdowns in Europe and zero growth in Asia or Latin America. Only hope for something significant is Japan.

Even Justice League had a great run in Brazil and China. Superheros >>> Star Wars Worldwide.

I don't see how these future standalone movies like Bobba Fett and Obi Wan are going to change things beside get back some lost audience from Europe.

I don't think a movie like Solo stands on its own. Without the nostalgia and the familiar characters/references it's just another generic sci-fi movie. That's why there is no real growth in a lot of places.

I think based on how they took this story and especially how TLJ was like, I cant see how Episode 9 can be a finale.

which only works against its boxoffice. If they continue with the story and characters that don't excite the audience, boxoffice can only go even more down.

Pretty sure at this point no other Star Wars movie is getting released outside of December for the next decade.

And like someone previously posted, I think if they go back to December, they will have at least one main tentpole competitor every time for those holiday dollars.  This movie lost Star Wars their "get every screen and a clear weekend" advantage...it probably also lost them some DOM % and restrictions on theaters for next time.

Theaters already got let down in weeks 3-4 on the TLJ deal...and now, they might be let down OW for Star Wars, let alone the next 4 (although I'm sure they couldn't have agreed to the same terms as TLJ)...burn me once, shame of you, burn me twice, shame on me...

Most recently, Black Panther which had 97% on critics RT and absolutely stellar WOM among the GA, hence the 700M DOM - but the Aud Score on RT is still only 79%, which is just two % higher than Thor: The Dark Worlds 77% and we all can agree that BP had MUCH better WOM than Thor 2.

Most of the time, the scores are balanced after the movie has been released for a few weeks/months and it isnt the trolls who vote anymore but the actual people who saw the film. But in the weeks leading up to release and for the first few weeks after that, online scores are just controlled by fandoms and not reliable when we want to determine whether or not the reception among the majority of filmgoers is good.

Yep, Black Panther should be in the high 80's like Wonder Woman but racists and other MCU haters lowered it's score out of spite.

I hope dom performs stronger and 15M in previews translates to more than 100M on OW.

If that doesn't happen, it could miss 500M worldwide...

I wouldn't say 79% is voted down so much as voted on.  That's basically 80%, and I think that's a fair score all things considered.  I think we could agree that BP is good, but not perfect.  And something in the ballpark of 75-90 is a typical, fair score.  That would depend on how big the flaws are to you.

I liked the movie a lot, but I came out of it thinking it was 80-85% and realistically a bit overhyped.  So I wouldn't call this an example of score manipulation.  Maybe there's a very small number of racists and haters in there dragging an 85 down to a 79, but those people are almost certainly countered by the people who loved it too much, rating it 100/100 perfect.

As for people giving Thor 2 a 77... well I think that's just how people felt at the time.

I have a hard time thinking Disney will actually follow through with these origin movies unless IX is really huge. Solo is one of the franchise's most iconic characters, and if people aren't that excited about his origin, can't imagine why they would be about Obi-Wan or Boba Fett.

It had a 3.5 multi after opening with 200mil, there is no way that racists didn't help lower that score. Thor 2 didn't have a 3.5 multi, it had like a 2.4. If you don't see something fishy about that I don't know what to tell you.

It was at 70% a few hours after release. Most user reviews had 2 star ratings so it looked like someone put a bunch of bots to lower the score, RT stopped it and the score rose during the weekend. They wiped a lot of the bot reviews so the audience score reviews only go to page 50 out of 100.

i think that can be counter-intuitive as Solo's casting became a huge issue due to that iconic status thanks to what Ford brought to it. other less iconic characters won't rub people the wrong way with the casting.

edit: probably people were interested in Solo's origin story but this wasn't the right vehicle.

Well, the international numbers are pretty disastrous thus far.

Lucasfilm is going to have to re-think their long term plans with the Star Wars franchise.

Personally, i'd love to see them branch into other areas of the universe and move away from the "nostalgia trip" part of the series have become. It's painfully obvious that international audiences (and apparently a lot of domestic audiences) are over that, it's time to wow people with something new (and when i say new i don't mean TLJ new).

We don't need "origin stories" for already established, iconic characters, give people something new.

Stop releasing Star Wars films every year, they all look the same, they all have the same shit in them. It’s like putting out a random James Bond film every year. People are gonna get tired.

They could at at least just have a 2 year gap like the Fast and Furious movies.

Obi-Wan might resonate well with overseas audience because of the prequels

I think you guys are forgetting that despite the Trolls BP still got back up to 79%...

I think with TLJ, it had a double whammy of alt-right trolls and a pissed off fanbase, unlike BP which faced only any alt right trolls as the MCU fanbase liked BP a lot.

I think the problem is an Obi Wan film seems so small scale.

What he faces off against the Sand People? Unless you throw in Child Luke and some connections to the Vader and Palpatine storyline.

We already had a much more interesting sand people storyline in KOTR @4815162342

That’s my thinking as well. A boba fett movie loooks like a big risk right now.

to be fair there are multiple mcu films and there's no slowing down. i think it comes down to patience and planning for the long-term (easier typed than done). hp had 8 films in 10 years and were well executed. sw has such a massive fan-base and love that i don't see any issue with tlj and solo being close to eachother. if there's one franchise that could pull that off it's sw. but both are looking at less than expected reception and that's the problem. in that case, some gap will help sw9. but if the movies are well received and the stories are interesting, i don't think for a franchise like sw big gaps are needed.
