I think it now as well. I wanted to be more cautious and wait for the 2nd weekend drops around the world, but im now convinced.

Avatar WW is toast.

A 2.3x multiplier is all it needs? That will be easy.

$3b is the real target after a weekend of this size.

You can disagree with the sentiment in La Binoche's original words; but there is some truth to Ehrlich's tweet. From an economic perspective, Disney is approaching monopoly status in the movie industry. If you have studied economics at all, you would know monopolies are almost never good for consumers.

Yes, this is a massive weekend worth celebrating if you're a box office fan or a Marvel fan. There's also room for concern from people who love the industry or movies other than CBMs.

There may be some truth to Ehrlich's tweet but attempting to shame fans is just more of him being an attention seeking contrarian. The guy is annoying af.

I'm just joking. but yes, I think records will fall sooner than people think cause now is easier to create a perfect storm. I mean, EG demolished IW's record and will make 3 billie after IW's 2 billie. those types of numbers (2 billie) will soon become more frequent thanks to expanded markets, inflation, increasing number of IMAX, AVX, VIP, etc specialty screens that charge more.

2 Billie is not easy in 2019 when the ER is so shit.

um the entire movie industry is a monopoly. Sony Pictures is owned by giant conglomerate Sony. WB is owned by AT&T. Etc. People are only hating on Disney because they are producing decent content and having success. WB could have been 2x bigger than Disney with Harry Potter, DC, LOTR etc. No one is to blame for their failure.

The fact that Disney never got bought out is kind of a feat honestly.

Furthermore Infinity Wars fell 15% on Sunday. So why are they projecting this one to drop more?

Just gives us something to look forward to tomorrow when it increases in actuals.

Also, they are predicting a 40% drop on Sunday for Captain Marvel.

That seems rather steep as well given that spillover business should continue, so it's figures could also go up.

Even with a full day to know it was headed there, it's still tough to wrap my head around the fact that Endgame beat the previous weekend record in two days and landed nearly $100 million higher. Like, I absolutely did not think that the realistic ceiling for a film's opening weekend was this high.

WB DOESN'T CONTROL THE DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS OF HBO!

They're two different assets owned by the same parent company (Time Warner). That's like saying that LucasFilm scheduled Toy Story 4 to come out in June or something.

WB only needed to send out a request and HBO would follow. It's obvious that they have been trying to stop the Marvel train this entire year. Shazam being released after Captain Marvel - to try to suck up some of the GA interest for SH movies before EG

Winterfell episode debuting same weekend as EG

Pikachu released 2 weeks after EG to cut off it's legs.

I faintly remember everyone saying the same thing about TFA in 2015

Eh, not really though. In fact, many of us kept saying that if a movie with TFAs hype could open outside of the deflated holiday season, it could go much higher. Most people were also already thinking IX could beat TFAs OW at the time too (which ironically is unlikely now). TFA broke the record by 40m. EG is breaking it by 100. C’mon, there’s zero chance this record falls before 2025 at the absolute earliest, and I honestly don’t see it happening before 2030. That’s how long I think it will take for another franchise to get this big and have a long built up climax+ inflation to help.

Um... and Civil War, which made even more than Aquaman.

Isn't that technically more unbelievable??

:ohmygod:

Or are you just trying to start a DC thing? Lol

If it adjusts upwards another $6m, it's over Iron Man 3 worldwide ;)

CM just under $200k less than Catching Fire (on the same day), hopefully it'll pass it with actuals.

It had standard drops after that weekend and added 11m off a 4.3m weekend. $430m sounds likely for CM with $435m not completely dead.

SW IX has a small chance to pass the Thursday record set by Endgame. 0 chance to beat the Avengers Endgame opening weekend.

0 chance for Thursday too IMO.. Hype is not there for it like TFA..

I didn't see this handwringing when people were rooting for Roma to win Best Picture even though Netflix is basically doing the same shit for streaming though.

The major difference with Netflix is that companies, especially large ones, are entering the streaming market. You don't see major new movie studios opening. Netflix makes movies for its service, not for mass box office distribution, as that would be cannibalization to some degree.
