U.K. figures….

£25.9 million 4-day ($35.2 million)

3-day weekend: £21 million

3-day weekends of predecessors:

Skyfall - £20.18 million

Spectre - £19.98 million.

Yes, Spectre had four days of burn off from opening on a Monday but, regardless, NTTD’s performance is staggering stuff.

Worth recalling that Skyfall and Spectre are the second and third biggest grossing films of all time in the U.K.  So the fact NTTD is punching with them upfront in these rockier times is quite remarkable.

Would it be wise to presume it could've opened to £30 million if it weren't for COVID, or are these figures close enough to what it would've opened to anyway?

Probably the lowest.

The last shot of the opening titles blending kaleidoscopically into that shot of the London skyline at dusk makes it immediately better than the QoS titles.

For me I’d say in terms of the opening titles it’d go:

Casino Royale

Skyfall

NTTD

Spectre

QoS

Although I feel like maybe my dislike of the QoS opening titles stems from how godawful the accompanying song is.

I doubt there was that much more room for growth outside of Scotland (they still have capacity restrictions)

possibly. I think there’s probably something to be said for a fraction of the audience wanting the crowds to calm down a bit.

will be very interesting to see the hold next weekend. I expect it will probably be very strong.

From my experience in my country, yes, there are crowd avoiding opening week now, just to have less crowded cinema hall for themselves.

My local boutique cinema, which is showing the movie in every one of its five screens, is nearly sold out for both Saturday and Sunday next weekend.

Should give everybody a hint that it looks like NTTD will have usual great 007 legs in the U.K.

I've heard nothing but great WOM, legs will be good.

The ending seems to be going over quite well from my anecdotal experience, I’ve seen it twice now and both times I’ve heard nothing but positivity towards how it ends and wraps up the Daniel Craig series as I exited the auditorium.

It’ll be interesting to see how US audiences respond to it.

it has been received well over here, for sure.

it’s yet to reach the level of the inevitable merry-go-round…

1. Youtubers create content about it as everyone is talking about it.
2. They hone in on the ending and why they think it’s bad for clicks

3. The media who use social media for their own content for clicks then write articles based on this

4. Quickly those that can’t form their own opinion will jump upon what they perceive falsely as the overwhelming sentiment.

Rinse and repeat for all the clickbait franchises that swing for the fences.

I hope I’m wrong and have actually been pleasantly surprised that it hasn’t happened yet. Still….we’re only 5 days in.

I’ve seen online negativity on social media with people sharing a cam version of a particular scene and ragging on it, but it doesn’t seem to get much traction in terms of likes and retweets, and honestly, in the context of the preceding 2.5 hours, the scene works really well. I feel like UK audiences generally seem to be fine with it.

This is absolutely nothing like The Last Jedi though, the people who said that it’d spark that level of discourse are way off the mark. I remember that discussion kicking off before I even got home from the midnight showing…

I absolutely loved this. first Craig Bond movie to have a good 3rd act since Casino Royale, 8/10.

(might be an unpopular opinion but I wasn't a huge fan of Skyfall besides Deakins's cinematography)

I don’t think anything could ever be like Last Jedi’s discourse! Thankfully.

Like you said though, promising signs.

In response to TLJ talk comparisons: I stumbled across a Youtuber called The Critical Drinker, who seems to be having really high viewership these days among Film reviewers on Youtube. And Oh my god, his comment section is disgusting. From what I've gathered he's someone like Geeks and Gamers or whatever who is quick to call out anything remotely "progressive" as PC  or woke. I didn't really pay much attention to his review, I don't think he was being too nasty, but my god his comment section was shocking. Didn't know the James Bond fandom is also so shitty but it makes sense I guess.

I haven't seen the film, but I don't think it's gonna be TLJ. I think the US and casual fans (like myself and my friends) are gonna respond to it well, but within the die hard James Bond community, it definitely is gonna be a bit like TLJ.

I think it'll have a strong second weekend hold, it's week three and week four I'm curious about given there's competition from Venom and Dune which will take the PLFs.

As soon as Lashana Lynch was confirmed to be a double-0 I think everyone knew that those type of people would be unnecessarily triggered by it.

I’d consider myself a fairly die-hard fan of Bond, and honestly I loved this and the level of closure it brings. I won’t go into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I’ll spoiler tag this just in case:

Spoiler

I’d struggle to understand why anyone would have a particularly big problem with how this film ends all things considered. This is the first time we’ve known that a certain film would be a Bond actors final appearance as the character, so neatly wrapping it up makes sense and also allows them to give his iteration of the character closure.

I was neutral on Lynch. Her character doesn't really affect the plot at all, which seems a bit unforgivable in a movie that's already full to the brim.

One thing that has stuck with me, though, is the location work. This must be the best looking Bond film ever. The opening sequence in Italy, especially, has the feel of a dream.

U.K. comparisons to measure against….

Spectre

Weekend 2: £13.1 million (down 68% from 7 day opening)

Weekend 3: £7.8 million (down 40%)

Weekend 4: £3.8 million (down 51% - Mockingjay 2 opened ))

Skyfall

Weekend 2: £16.1 million (down 20%)

Weekend 3: £10.4 million (down 35%)

Weekend 4: £5.6 million (down 47% - Breaking Dawn 2 opened ))

With NTTD opening in the same ballpark as both of these, and with WOM closer to Skyfall than Spectre, I would say 40% drop could be on the cards for weekend two. We have to take into account it opened on a Thursday so had one extra day bundled in with its first weekend than Skyfall did.

Venom, Halloween and Last Duel open on its third weekend, then Dune on its fourth.

Yet by the time the first batch arrive on October 15th I think it could have £50-55 million by that point.
