This is not really a recent thing at all. 

Sequels doing really well has been a thing since the '80s. That's 30+ years now. The whole reason Lucas and Spielberg have had to wear that "you destroyed cinema" crown for so long is because they essentially legitimized not just B movies, but the sequel. 

The fact that not every sequel does well doesn't mean it's some sort of new trend that sequels are expected to do well. Sequels have been expected to do well for decades now. That's why they keep getting made.

It will fall 25-35M short of Avatar’s total in its first run, which is a first run just O/U Avatar’s. Some people think it’s likely to get a major rerelease in the next year, some think it’s very unlikely. The situation is fairly unique so no one really knows for sure.
